Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port in Trelleborg reached new record levels in 2019

Port of Trelleborg reached new record levels in 2019 and thus secures it’s position as Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port. During 2019, the Port of Trelleborg notes a new record as 1,230,850 units passed through the port, which is an increase of 7.7%. The increase consists, among other things, of increased volumes for trucks and trailers by 4.9%, passenger cars increased by 13.2% and conventional rail increased by 24.8%, which is equal to 4,000 wagons. It is gratifying to note that Port of Trelleborg is now also the market leader in traffic to and from Poland.

The upward trend continues and the number of units has increased steadily since 1989. Port of Trelleborg has from a transport perspective a very favorable geographical position, where Europe meets Scandinavia. Since 2018 Port of Trelleborg operates five destinations. The port has a high frequency in number of arrivals and departures per day and the three shipping lines TT-Line, Unity Line and Stena Line have 14  ferries that operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

– The key to our continued positive development is that we work closely and together with our three shipping companies to develop the traffic and can thus be efficient and provide the best service. We want to continue to be Europe’s best RoRo port, says Jörgen Nilsson, CEO, Port of Trelleborg.

Increase of passenger cars and rail traffic

– The fact that the traffic of passenger cars has increased significantly is a natural part of the fact that traveling has changed, as people like to choose the sea route, which is the most environmental way to travel. The Swedish krona in relation to the euro is probably also a contributing reason for the increase. Port of Trelleborg will maintain and strengthen its position as the Baltic’s most efficient and climate smartest port in continuous development and we have been involved and actively worked with various stakeholders to increase the volume of the railway traffic. Here is another good example of the unique combination of shipping, road and rail that the Port of Trelleborg can offer, says Jörgen Nilsson.

– The new decade has just begun and Port of Trelleborg looks forward to exciting years ahead.  The expansion and relocation of the port to the new area in the southeast is in an expansive phase, the ferry berths no. 13 and no. 14 are expected to be ready in Q2 2020 and at the same time the construction of the ferry berths no. 11 and no. 12. will start. The result for 2019 is not finished yet, but we can promise a really good result, concludes Jörgen Nilsson.
