North Sea Handling stands behind the rotor sail tilting system on SC CONNECTOR
Through its subsidiary NSH Ships Equipment AS, an agreement with the Norwegian ship owner Sea-Cargo AS has been made to design and deliver complete tilting systems for two 35m tall and 5m wide Rotor Sails. The Rotor Sails are delivered by Norsepower and will be installed onboard the RoRo vessel, SC CONNECTOR. This technology will help to limit fuel consumption and reduce emissions by an estimate of 25%.
SC CONNECTOR is operating in the North Sea on a route with several of obstacles such as powerlines and bridges which require the rotor sails to have a tilting system for the ship to navigate through. The tilting system is a new concept and will open for a broader use of the rotor sail technology, contributing to fuel savings and less emissions. Preparations for the retrofit on the SC CONNECTOR are currently ongoing with the installation scheduled for Q4 2020.
The design of the tilting system and the integration onboard have been done in close collaboration also with other involved stakeholders such as the ship design company MDC and the classification society DNV-GL to assure it is fit for purpose. Extensive calculations and several of design iterations have been made to include everything from operations in extreme weather conditions to weight saving.
Roar Roksvåg, Managing Director: “We are proud to be part of this very unique project together with Sea-Cargo AS part of Seatrans Group who is a forerunner in the maritime community willing to push boundaries to develop and realize environmental friendly solutions such as this. It is also very rewarding and important in these times of global difficulties to utilize our common strengths in the company within related fields of technology.”
Johan Christian Hvide, CTO, Seatrans:” It’s been a pleasure working together on this project and we are very happy with the result. The future of shipping is dependent on that we can find new and smart ways of reducing emissions and our industry need more of these kinds of projects.
