Ecospray takes further orders from Ruhe Group - Green Line Liquid for biomethane production and liquefaction plants in Germany

Ecospray, the engineering company which is participated by Costa Crociere and is a member of the Carnival Group, has signed an important agreement with Green Line Liquid Anlagenbau for the creation of three new bio-LNG plants in Germany.

Ecospray specializes in technological solutions for the sustainable conversion of maritime and land-based industries, and is set to supply the German agricultural company – part of the Ruhe Group - with three complete biomethane production plants, which include pre-treatment, biogas upgrading and biomethane liquefaction systems.

The delivery of all three plants is planned for autumn 2023: one will be located in Bavaria, one in the state of Lower Saxony and one in Brandenburg. The total amount of bio-LNG expected to be produced by the three plants is around 26.5 tonnes per day: this fuel, which is destined for automotive use, will prevent more than 50.000 tonnes/year of CO2 from being produced.

While the main market for this fully carbon-neutral biomethane product is the heavy transport sector, this is not the only application: the fuel can also be used in the maritime industry, by the latest-generation LNG-powered ships. The entire process is part of the journey towards decarbonization initiated by the shipping industry worldwide.

Indeed, many shipowners have expressed an interest in these new zero-impact fuels, beginning with the Costa Group, the cruise operator which heads up Carnival Corporation and manages the Costa Crociere and AIDA Cruises brands; the Group is engaged in a number of projects which will see biofuels being tested and used on board its ships.

The new agreement between Ecospray and the Ruhe Group follows those signed back in 2021 and in March 2022 for the construction of six biomethane production plants, three of which are destined for the liquefaction of CO2 - also in Germany.

Just a few weeks back, the first plant producing bio-LNG from sewage in Darchau was also inaugurated by the former President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Christian Wulff, which serves as evidence of the increasing role played by biofuels in the process of decarbonization.
