Eckerö Line's FINLANDIA switches to shore power in the port of Tallinn
Finnish Eckerö Line's FINLANDIA will start to use land-based electricity at night in the port of Tallinn instead of its diesel-powered auxiliary engines. Switching to shore power is an environmental act that both improves air quality and reduces noise in the port environment. The project was part of the EU-funded Twin-Port III project to, among other things, improve the ports' energy efficiency.
Eckerö Line's FINLANDIA, which operates daily between Tallinn and Helsinki, will continue to connect to shore-side electricity at night in the port of Tallinn, ie using electricity produced on land. In this way, the ship's diesel engines can be switched off at night and the ship's environmental impact reduced. With land-based electricity, the ships' climate emissions during port time can be reduced by up to 50–80 percent.
- Using onshore power at night in Tallinn is a logical continuation of our long-term sustainability work. With this solution, we reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and for our part the noise level in the port environment, says Eckerö Line's CEO Taru Keronen.
Thanks to the facility for onshore electricity, all diesel-powered engines can be taken out of service for the night in Tallinn harbor.
- The Port of Tallinn has continuously developed its operations to reduce the negative environmental impact. Clean air and a clean Baltic Sea are our primary goals in sustainable development. An increase in the electricity capacity in the port in the center of the city helps us to improve air quality, reduce noise and cooperate with the shipping companies to ensure a cleaner and more quality living environment, states Vinn Kalm, Chairman of the Port of Tallinn.
