AIDA Cruises wants to reach zero emissions as early as 2040
AIDA Cruises works with partners from research, science and industry to develop innovative solutions and use technologies with the aim of putting the first zero-emission ship into service as early as 2030.
By 2040, ten years before the International Maritime Organization (IMO) climate targets, the cruise company wants to be on track with its fleet in an emission-neutral way. AIDA Cruises is thus making an active contribution to achieving the Paris climate targets and the European Green Deal.
With its green cruising strategy, the company shows how it has been facing the global challenges of climate change for many years.
The most important milestones at a glance:
2004: The use of shore power is already taken into account with the order for AIDADIVA and for all other new buildings.
2011: Contract award for the world's first ships that can be supplied with low-emission liquefied natural gas (LNG) or shore power in the port.
2016: Commissioning of AIDAPRIMA: In addition to the possibility of LNG supply in the port, the ship also has a shore power connection and an exhaust gas cleaning system.
2017: Premiere in Hamburg: AIDASOL is the first cruise ship to use Europe's first shore power system.
2018: World premiere: Commissioning of AIDANOVA, the first cruise ship that is powered by low-emission LNG and was awarded the "Blue Angel" in 2019. The use of LNG is a bridging technology for AIDA Cruises. Together with various partners from business and science, solutions for CO2-free production of liquefied gas are already being worked on.
2019: Ten ships in the AIDA fleet are capable of shore power or are technically prepared for it, more ships will follow.
2021: Thanks to the AIDA Cruises initiative, shore power systems will be opened in Kiel and Rostock. Fuel cells will be used for the first time on board AIDANOVA. Commissioning of AIDACOSMA, AIDA's second LNG cruise ship.
2022: An AIDA ship will have the largest battery storage system to date in the cruise.
As part of its Green Cruising strategy, AIDA Cruises is not only investing in the latest environmental technology for its newbuildings, but is also working intensively on finding technical solutions for the ships in the existing fleet.
For example, it is about the question of whether it will be possible to retrofit such efficient fuel cells on a ship in the near future that they could supply a large part of the energy required for hotel operations, for example. Or how to recycle waste as recyclables on board for energy generation and much more.
The careful use of resources is another elementary pillar of AIDA Cruises' commitment to sustainability. The aim is, for example, to reduce food waste per person on board by 30 percent by the end of 2022 compared to 2019. The number of single-use plastic items has already been reduced by 50 percent compared to 2018. By the end of 2022, savings of 75 percent compared to 2018 should be achieved.
