Venice to lose UNESCO world heritage status?

UNESCO has threatened to put Venice on its list of “endangered” world heritage sites unless effective steps are undertaken to ban large cruise ships from sailing into the lagoon by 2017.

The UNESCO committee has raised “extreme concern” regarding the current physical and ecological state of the lagoon. The UN organization demands that “substantial progress” be made by the Italian government until February 2017 concerning measures which ensure the future protection of the lagoon.

The Italian government had enforced a ban on cruise ships sailing Venice’s famous Giudecca channel which are larger than GT 96.000 in 2014, but a court ruling lifted the ban soon afterwards, claiming the ban would infringe public and private interests disproportionately.
