Portland-Yarmouth traffic growing

Bay Ferries report steadily increasing passenger and car numbers since reviving the Portland, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, ferry service which was operated in 2014 and 2015 by Nova Star Ferries but failed despite receiving CAN$40m in government subsidies.

The 886 passenger/282 car Austal Auto Express catamaran, THE CAT, previously named PUERTO RICO and chartered from the U.S. Navy, makes daily return sailings taking around five hours either way, a substantial saving on the timings of Nova Star Ferries conventional ferry NOVA STAR.

Bay Ferries handled an average of 181 passengers and 78 cars each day in the first week of service from 15 June with carryings climbing to 285 passengers and 97 vehicles daily in the second week before the week of 1-7 July saw totals average 307 passengers and 106 cars.
