La Méridionale Unveils Names for Chinese-built Ro-Pax Pair
FerryLa Méridionale has announced the names of its two next-generation hybrid ro-paxes under construction at the CMI Jinling Weihai yard and set to enter service in 2027: ALBANOVA and AZURA. Drawing inspiration from Corsica’s nickname, the “Isle of Beauty,” these vessels will proudly represent both the company and the island’s vibrant heritage.
Currently under construction at a combined cost of nearly EUR 400 million, the ferries are designed to significantly advance sustainable maritime travel. While primarily using conventional LNG, the 21,000 kW engines include multi-fuel capabilities, accommodating future adoption of biogas and synthetic methane. They are expected to cut emissions by 50% compared to La Méridionale’s PIANA.
Each ship will feature a 13 MWh battery pack, enabling zero-emission capabilities while in port—a significant advantage, especially at the port in Corsica, given the limited availability of shore power solutions.
Measuring 180 metres in length and 30.8 metres in width, each ferry will accommodate 932 passengers across 264 cabins in seven categories, including 21 luxury cabins with balconies. The interiors, designed by renowned architect Jean-Philippe Nuel—known for his work on Ponant’s LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT icebreaking cruise ship—promise a blend of elegance and comfort.
Meanwhile, according to French media Le Marin, the CMA CGM group is reportedly preparing to sell La Méridionale, which it acquired in 2023.
