Hydrogen provided clean shore power for Stena ferries
FerryPort of Gothenburg has over two weeks carried out a pilot project which successfully showed that hydrogen can be the key to clean shore power in ports without electrical infrastructure. Over the two weeks, a hydrogen powered generator running on 100% green hydrogen was used to supply electricity to Stena Line's two Gothenburg-Kiel ro-pax ferries STENA GERMANICA and STENA SCANDINAVICA while berthed in Gothenburg.
The generator was connected to Stena Line's existing Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system, delivering emission free energy without relying on the local grid. The test, carried out in collaboration with Stena Line, Hitachi Energy, PowerCell Group, Linde Gas and the Port of Gothenburg, shows how mobile hydrogen solutions could help more ports cut emissions, especially ahead of new EU regulations requiring OPS by 2030. Hydrogen is already making its mark in Gothenburg, from refuelling stations for heavy vehicles to powering construction equipment. Now it is proving its value at the quay as well, states the Swedish port.
