Funding approved for new main engines for Strandfaraskip Landsins’ flagship
FerryThe Faroese Government, Føroya landsstýri, has allocated a total of DKK 74.4 million to upgrade the flagship of the publicly owned Faroese ferry operator Strandfaraskip Landsins, the 2005-built, 12,670 GT RoPax SMYRIL.
The ferry, which serves the Faroe Islands’ longest domestic route between the capital Tórshavn and Tvøroyri on the island of Suðuroy, underwent a major technical upgrade at the Fayard repair yard in Denmark last year. This included the replacement of three auxiliary engines.
The latest funding covers the complete replacement of the main engines, scheduled for 2028. The 2025 upgrade, carried out during the ferry’s 20-year class survey, cost a total of DKK 120 million.
SMYRIL sails for around 11.5 hours a day and makes 3,700 departures and arrivals annually on the route, which has a crossing time of two and a half hours.
