SMYRIL is returning to the Faroe Islands after extensive upgrade

FerryAfter seven weeks in dock at the repair yard Fayard in Denmark, and following extensive retrofit and installation work, Strandfaraskip Landsins’ flagship, SMYRIL, has now set course for the Faroe Islands. Major work has been completed. The most significant tasks included rebuilding the aft section, installing two new stern thrusters, and fitting three new auxiliary engines - each more than twice as powerful as the previous ones.

In addition, a great deal of work was carried out in connection with the vessel’s 20-year classification. Before departing from Fayard, SMYRIL conducted sea trials of various onboard systems. Many systems were dismantled at the start of the project, then reassembled and tested to ensure everything functioned properly before full power could be applied. Personnel from Strandfaraskip Landsins’ operations department and staff from Fayard led the large-scale project, which at its peak involved around 200 people.

The highest number of workers onboard at one time was about 100, and there were around ten subcontractors involved. The SMYRIL crew that participated in the dock work numbered 24 people, including both project managers. The remaining crew members - 32 in total, working in shifts - operated the GALAXY, chartered in from Greek A-Ships Management to cover for SMYRIL on the 125 minutes Tórshavn-Tvøroyri route.

“These weeks have been quite demanding for many people at Strandfaraskip Landsins, both at sea and on land, but everyone deserves heartfelt thanks for their effort and support,” said Managing Director Niels Juel Arge.

In 2028, SMYRIL will return to dock, when the main task will be replacing the four main engines. This project had a budget of DKK 120 million, including the cost of the chartered ferry GALAXY. The budget requirement in 2028 is expected to be roughly the same, Strandfaraskip Landsins, estimates. The 12.670 GT SMYRIL with capacity of 975 passengers and 200 cars/540 lanemetres, was delivered from Spanish Izar in 2005.
