Death toll rises sharply following Philippine ferry fire
FerryThe Philippine Coast Guard has continued to update the casualty figures following the ferry disaster on 9 September, when the ferry JUNE ASTER caught fire while sailing from Manila to Palawan Province. The ferry was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members when the fire broke out at around 18:00 local time.
The first update, published on the morning after the disaster, stated that at least five of those on board had been confirmed dead, while 87 remained missing.
In an update issued on 16 September, the Philippine Coast Guard reported that the confirmed death toll had risen to 77, while the number of people still missing had fallen to 12. JUNE ASTER is owned by Philippine ferry operator Atienza Interisland Ferries.
