Danish shipyard sends Torghatten newbuilding on sea trials
FerryHvide Sande Shipyard in Denmark has begun sea trials of its newbuilding no. 158. The 50-metre all-electric ferry was ordered in June 2024 by Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten.
The vessel, which will be named HELGØY, will operate for Torghatten Nord in the Tromsø region of northern Norway. It will have a battery capacity of 4 MWh, with propulsion provided by two Schottel SRE 270 LFP azimuth thrusters, each rated at 750 kW.
HELGØY is a one-off design by The Norwegian Ship Design Company. Located on the west coast of Jutland, Hvide Sande Shipyard has a reference list of 11 smaller RoPax ferries, including the Torghatten order. Previous vessels include Molslinjen’s GROTTE and Ventrafiken’s URANIBORG.
HELGØY is the yard’s first ferry order from Norway, whose smaller ferry newbuildings in recent years have all come from either Poland or Türkiye. In several cases involving Turkish yards, the hulls are completed and outfitted in Norway. Hvide Sande Shipyard itself uses hull suppliers in Poland.
