Armón floats out Baleària's electric fast ferry ESPAÑA 2030
High-speedAstilleros Armón floated out ESPAÑA 2030, the first of two battery-electric fast catamarans for Baleària, in Gijón on 24 October. The 87-metre ship is built for the Tarifa–Tangier route and is due to enter service in summer 2027 after dock and sea trials.
ESPAÑA 2030 can make the 18-nautical-mile crossing on its 11.5 MWh batteries alone. Automated robotic arms in Tarifa and Tanger Ville will charge the ships at up to 16 MW, giving a fast charge in 40 minutes. The ships also have shore power connections.
The second catamaran is under construction in the same dock and is expected to enter service at the end of 2027. The project, which covers both ships and the electrification of the two ports, is worth more than EUR 200 million.
