DRBA awards contract to SENESCO Marine for new hybrid ferry

The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) has taken a key step towards greener ferry travel by awarding a USD 78.6 million contract to SENESCO Marine LLC for a new diesel-hybrid vessel to join the Cape May–Lewes Ferry fleet, replacing the ageing MV Cape Henlopen.

This unanimous commission decision, made on 18 November 2025, will see the 75-car passenger/vehicle ferry reduce emissions significantly, with construction starting early in 2026 and completion targeted for summer 2029.

Grimaldi Group and Weihai select Silverstream® System for nine RoPax newbuildings

Silverstream Technologies will supply air lubrication systems (ALS) for nine RoPax newbuildings contracted by the Grimaldi Group at China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard co. The latest order, which includes four vessels for Grimaldi Lines, a pair for Minoan Lines and three ships for Finnlines, is the largest ever RoPax order awarded to Silverstream and builds on the 15 cumulative in-service years of ALS operation across the Grimaldi fleet. The Minoan Lines' vessels are also the first Greek-flag installations of ALS for Silverstream.

Auramarine, a fuel supply systems expert, has been selected to deliver advanced fuel supply systems for three new RoPax vessels ordered by Finnlines, further strengthening the companies' commitment to cleaner shipping and innovation. Auramarine delivers methanol, biofuels and HFO fuel systems to Finnlines RoPax vessels.

BOS Power secures contract with Fjellstrand for complete battery electric propulsion system to a 57m newbuild ferry

BOS Power announced the signing of a major contract with Fjellstrand to deliver a comprehensive battery electric propulsion system for a newbuilt 55-meter electric catamaran ferry. The partnership underscores BOS Power's role as a system integrator, responsible for the entire propulsion line from bridge to propeller.

The vessel, designed by Fjellstrand, will be operated by Gulen Skyss AS outside the city of Bergen on Norway's west coast between Breistein and Valestrand. Scheduled to commence service November 29th 2027, the ferry will carry 50 PBE, cruising at 11 knots.

Washington State Ferries selects ABB to power their first hybrid-electric newbuild vessels

ABB has secured an order with Washington State Ferries (WSF), the United States' largest ferry operator, to supply and integrate hybrid-electric propulsion systems for two hybrid-electric 160-auto ferries that initiate the owner's ambitious System Electrification Program. With the first two ships scheduled for delivery from Eastern Shipbuilding Group, one apiece in 2030 and 2031, the contract also includes an option for a third ferry. WSF has previously announced plans to build up to 16 ships by the end of 2040, as part of a ferry electrification program targeting lower emissions.

On 28 November in Shanghai, the christening and delivery ceremony of the GRANDE ISTANBUL was held. This is the fourth of seven ammonia-ready Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTCs) ordered from the SWS (Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company Limited) and CSTC (China Shipbuilding Trading Company Limited) shipyards—both part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).

Red Funnel gets the go ahead for the redevelopment of its East Cowes ferry terminal on the Isle of Wight

Red Funnel has received the green light for the redevelopment of its East Cowes ferry terminal on the Isle of Wight. The company's East Cowes terminal is used by it's Raptor-class passenger/vehicle double enders as well as its freight ferry RED KESTREL on services from Southampton.

Red Funnel's proposals for East Cowes include a new terminal building, automated check-in and a new marshalling yard with a capacity for more than 350 vehicles.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries secures contract for new Jetfoil

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has been awarded a contract to construct one new "Kawasaki Jetfoil," a high-speed, fully submerged hydrofoil passenger vessel. The agreement was signed jointly with Kyushu Yusen and the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency.

The new vessel is slated for construction at KHI's Kobe Works and is scheduled for delivery in June 2029. Following delivery, the jetfoil will be deployed for passenger transport services along the Hakata-Iki/Tsushima maritime route.

Stena Line and Associated British Ports to begin work on new multi-million pound Immingham terminal

Stena Line, and the UK's largest port operator, Associated British Ports (ABP), are to commence work on a new freight ferry terminal at the Port of Immingham. The new terminal represents a joint investment of more than GBP 200 million in the port and a boost to the Humber region of England where the unaccompanied freight market has been steadily growing.

Located in Lincolnshire, Immingham is becoming a strategic hub for Stena Line, which currently runs two daily services from the Humber region to The Netherlands. ABP's four Humber ports collectively already make up the UK's number 1 gateway for trade by volume.
