Port of Ystad: The new port will soon be ready for use

The Port of Ystad in the south of Sweden has been expanded with new ferry berths to be able to receive more traffic and larger ships. On Wednesday, November 25, the first tests were conducted in the new port to secure that the new ferry berths work as planned. From the turn of the year, the new ferry berths will be used regularly.

“We are very happy to finalize this comprehensive project. The Port of Ystad now has good conditions to continue to grow on both the passenger and freight side. We look forward to welcoming current and future shipping companies in our new port", says Björn Boström, CEO of Port of Ystad.

The Port of Ystad has for a long time seen a marked increase in traffic regarding both freight and passenger traffic and forecasts show that traffic, despite the pandemic, will continue to increase. It applies to traffic to and from Poland, the Danish island Bornholm and now also Germany. Therefore, there has been a need to increase capacity.

The project started in May 2019. One and a half years later, the new port section is now complete. The port project, which is now nearing completion, is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the south of Sweden. It has also received a record-breaking EU grant.

The new ferry area increases the total size of the port and also includes new berths, arrival areas, areas for customs and border control and not least efficient ferry locations.

“The Port of Ystad is one of the fastest-growing ports in Sweden. We are the largest port in Sweden with daily ferry traffic to Poland and Bornholm and the third-largest ferry passenger port. Before the advent of the pandemic, the Port of Ystad broke records for several years in a row. Expanding the port has been a prerequisite for being able to continue to grow and to contribute to growth and jobs not only in Ystad but in the entire region”, concludes Björn Boström.
