HADAG announces details of its fleet renewal program
HADAG, the prime provider of public transport service in the port of Hamburg, announced details of its fleet renewal program and thereby underlines the company‘s clear engagement on environmental sustainability.
The new class of ferries sets another milestone for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Hamburg.
When passengers embark and disembark, the ship will run on battery power to avoid exhaust fumes. The battery system fulfils the regulatory redundancy requirements related to the propulsion system and will be charged by shore power at the HADAG base twice per day.
The first order of the new ferry generation will operate on a Tier V combustion engine and emit significantly less CO2.Additionally, the second lot will be equipped with Hydrogen Fuel Cells instead enabling a Zero Emission operation. HADAG will thus be Germany’s first provider of waterborne public transport that uses hydrogen as fuel.
Later retrofit of Fuel Cells on the first ship has already been taken into account. The reason for this two-step approach is the time-consuming approval process. Considering the permissible length of 33.4m the main dimensions have been optimized to improve the overall energy efficiency. Each ferry can carry up to 250 passengers on two decks and offers a range of amenities such as dedicated bicycle storage spaces. The ship is designed for single-crew operation.
HADAG has appointed naValue GmbH, a Custom Ferry Design & Consultancy company to develop its innovative next-generation ferry. „We are delighted to support HADAG in this pioneering project by leading the conceptual and technological development. The excellent cooperation with our client´s experts is reflected by this important contribution to a greener future.“ the company´s spokesman said.
HADAG operates a fleet of 26 ships on 7 different routes and serves a network of 20 destinations in the port of Hamburg with an annual transport volume of abt. 9 Million passengers. HADAG is a well-established company with roots reaching back to 1888.
