DNV GL awarded Technology Feasibility certificate to COMPA Repairs innovative technology – fast and durable repair solution for ships' pipes and structures

As a part of the project «COMPA 2GO - Composite Repairs for Ships: Service Demonstration, Certification and Market Entry», as2con-Alveus d.o.o. succeeded in gaining Technology Feasibility certificate for its innovative technology COMPA Repairs. The project is financed under highly competitive Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 2 programme and it was selected for funding for its innovative nature and the benefits it can bring to the maritime sector providing faster, cheaper and much safer alternative than the traditional cutting and welding of steel parts on board a ship.

The first period of the certification process was completed by receiving the Statement of Feasibility from DNV GL for the use of composite patches for repairing corroded steel pipes and tank plates with the aim to provide immediate water tightness and slow down further corrosion. The composite patch is a carbon and glass fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), a lightweight material, but with a significant strength.

Besides the technology certification, COMPA Repairs got a Certificate of Registration for a European Union trade mark for engineering services and for the repair and maintenance of various maritime structures valid for a period of 10 years.

Demonstrating innovative technology
COMPA Repairs technology was demonstrated onboard ships in service. Part of these demonstrations were performed in various EU port while few were performed during vessel voyage. Two most challenging repairs took place during ship stay in the port of Antwerp, Belgium.

Repair of the main sea water pipe
To reinforce the pipe and to restore its watertightness, our specialists had to apply COMPA Repairs to both inner and outer side of the pipe in very limited period of time. On top of that, the damaged areas were in a very confined space.

Repair of a scrubber system pipe leaking NaOH
The other challenge included a repair of a pipe leaking NaOH. The task of this repair was to ensure more permanent structural integrity and watertightness of the pipe that was previously unsuccessfully repaired by unknown service provider using only glass fibres and polyester.
