AI will reduce emissions from Stena Line’s Polish ferry

With the help of artificial intelligence, Stena Line will reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions from the Polish ferry STENA NORDICA. The ship is the eighth in Stena Line's fleet to be equipped with the AI assistant Stena Fuel Pilot, which supports the captains to drive in the most fuel-efficient way between Karlskrona and Gdynia.

Stena Line's AI assistant Stena Fuel Pilot has been developed in close collaboration between the company's technical department and captains on board the ships. The tool combines artificial intelligence with nautical expertise and data from a wide range of sources such as waves, currents, wind, depth, ship specifications and timetable. The result is support for the captains to drive in the most fuel-efficient way and reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

We work in parallel to reduce fuel consumption from our existing ships and at the same time develop tomorrow's technology, ships and fuels. This is a shining example of how we combine modern AI technology with the great nautical competence our naval officers possess to together reduce our environmental impact, says Erik Lewenhaupt, Sustainability Manager at Stena Line.

In August, STENA NORDICA, which operates daily between Karlskrona in Sweden and Gdynia in Poland, became the eighth vessel in Stena Line's fleet to be equipped with a Stena Fuel Pilot. The ferries MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN and SKÅNE, which operate in Trelleborg and Rostock in Germany, and STENA FLAVIA, which operates between Nynäshamn and Ventspils in Latvia, have previously been equipped with the AI assistant.
