However, a technical failure aboard the chartered ferry COMMODORE CLIPPER has meant that the service has effectively been suspended since 16 September, two weeks before its planned final sailing.

“We apologise to all affected customers and are sorry that the route can't complete its final sailings; we know many had hoped to be part of them. It has been a pleasure for all at Brittany Ferries to link Portsmouth and Le Havre since 2013. However, the current economic context means the route is no longer viable and, sadly, we have had to make the difficult decision to close it,” Brittany Ferries said in a statement to the BBC.

In June, Brittany Ferries also announced that its Poole-Cherbourg route would close in early November. At the same time, the company said it would offer two ferries for sale on the second-hand market: the 1992-built BARFLEUR, which serves Poole–Cherbourg, and the 15-year-younger COTENTIN, which serves Rosslare–Cherbourg. COTENTIN operates the Ireland–France route alongside the chartered RoRo NORBAY. That fleet arrangement will change next March with the introduction of the chartered RoPax WEXFORD, currently named VIZZAVONA.
