Surge in Bookings on Finnlines' Sweden-Finland Route

FerryAt the turn of last year, Finnlines introduced two new vessels, FINNSIRIUS and FINNCANOPUS, on the route between Sweden and Finland. These ships have sparked increased interest among travellers, with Swedish bookings for the summer already up by 55 per cent compared to the previous year. Both Swedes and Finns have flocked to Finnlines, but onboard, certain differences stand out—particularly in what they purchase.

Over the past 12 months, passengers from 137 different nationalities have travelled with Finnlines on the route between Kapellskär and Naantali via Åland. Despite this wide range of nationalities, Swedes and Finns account for 75 per cent of passengers. For June, July, and August this year, Finnlines reports a total booking increase of 24 per cent compared to the previous year, with Swedish bookings rising by an impressive 55 per cent.

“We’re delighted that more Swedes are choosing us. Beyond the booking figures, which speak for themselves, it’s also evident in the increased demand for fish and seafood—and the fact that we’re selling more bags of sweet pick-and-mix,” says Kristiina Uppala, head of Finnlines’ customer service.

Sweet vs. Salty
The differences are clear in Finnlines’ onboard shops: Swedes tend to grab sweet pick-and-mix, while Finns prefer salty liquorice. Swedes also buy whisky, whereas Finns more often opt for cognac. Additionally, Italians wines are more popular with Swedes, while Finns favour Spanish varieties.

105,000 Cups of Coffee
During the sister ships’ first year in operation, Fisherman’s Bistro has sold 32,000 hamburger meals and 17,000 Fish & Chips. And the love for coffee unites both Swedes and Finns—105,000 cups have been served.

“Interest for the summer is high, and the most popular holiday weeks are being booked right now. We believe this is because we offer something for everyone—from relaxing saunas and spas to fine à la carte dining, an exciting wine list, pick-and-mix, and a dog play area. We look forward to welcoming this summer’s guests onboard!” says Kristiina Uppala.
