Russian RoRo ship attacked by drones in the Mediterranean

Ro-roThe Russian-owned and operated multipurpose RoRo ship LADY MARIIA was reportedly struck by several aerial drones in the Mediterranean on 6 September. At the time of the attack, the vessel was heading east, reportedly from Algeria towards Syria.

A video circulating online apparently shows the attack, filmed from a drone.

LADY MARIIA is operated by MG-Flot and has been subject to US sanctions since 2022 and Ukrainian sanctions since May this year, as the vessel is suspected of having been used to transport weapons from Syria to Russia.

However, Ukraine has not confirmed that it was behind the attack, which does not appear to have caused major structural damage to the vessel. No injuries have been reported.

The 2000-built LADY MARIIA was acquired from Navidux Shipping in 2021, for which it operated under the name GLOBAL CARRIER. The vessel has a deadweight tonnage of 7,172 tonnes and a capacity of 512 lane metres. It is also equipped with two cranes.
