Newcleo, Pininfarina, and Fincantieri showcase next-generation nuclear power solution for potential marine applications

At the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, newcleo, Pininfarina, and Fincantieri unveil a sustainable nuclear power solution, presenting a life-size model of newcleo’s TL-40 liquid lead-cooled reactor. This compact, safe reactor is designed for large ship propulsion and off-grid energy production, addressing climate change and decarbonisation.

The TL-40, styled by Pininfarina with a vase-like form and intricate slated design, offers an open configuration for public exploration. These fourth-generation small modular reactors represent a revolutionary approach to the challenge of decarbonization by offering the answer to the perceived problems of traditional nuclear power.

The innovative lead-acid cooling system introduces passive safety systems that eliminate the risk of nuclear accidents through the physical laws that govern the operation of the reactor. In addition, these reactors are able to eliminate the nuclear waste generated by traditional nuclear power plants through a virtuous system of multi-recycling that allows them to be burned by generating clean, cheap and practically inexhaustible energy.

To illustrate these processes, a system has been set up for the interactive visualization of data and information on nuclear energy and its role within the decarbonization process of energy systems. The installation will reveal the effectiveness of nuclear energy in decarbonising marine transport, as well as the potential contained in Europe's existing nuclear waste that would be sufficient to feed electricity demand on the continent for hundreds of years.

Fincantieri's shipbuilding expertise supports potential marine applications, while Pininfarina's design integrates aesthetics for urban and industrial settings. The trio's collaboration, ongoing since 2023, includes plans for a nuclear fuel R&D centre in France.
