New Türkiye–Russia route apparently suspended
Ro-roIn cooperation with logistics company Geo Grand Line Global, Turkish RoRo operator Lider Shipping launched a RoRo freight service between Trabzon, Türkiye, and Novorossiysk, Russia, on 14 July. However, the service, which was to be operated by Lider Shipping’s RoRo SAMPIYON TRABZONSPOR, appears to have been suspended.
Since late July, there have been several reports of suspected Ukrainian drone attacks on RoRo ships serving Russian ports from Türkiye, including NADEZHDA, which operated between Samsun and Tuapse (see separate article).
Videos have also circulated on social media showing Lider Shipping’s RoRo L KOCATEPE, which also operates between Samsun and Tuapse, with its entire accommodation block covered by anti-drone netting.
In November 2025, Lider Shipping was also involved in an unsuccessful attempt to relaunch a combined freight and passenger service between Trabzon and Sochi, Russia, using the 1974-built RoPax SEABRIDGE.
At the time, a spokesperson suggested to the Turkish press that bureaucratic obstacles imposed by the local Russian authorities in Sochi had prevented the service from starting.
