GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE became the first ferry to use shore power at UK Port

FerryBrittany Ferries’ LNG dual-fuel battery-hybrid RoPax ferry GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE departed Portsmouth for Caen, France, on 3 August as the first ferry ever to have charged its batteries using shore power at a UK port. Portsmouth International Port inaugurated the UK’s first shore power facility in late July.

It will primarily provide shore power to visiting cruise ships and the port’s regular ferries, particularly Brittany Ferries’ two LNG dual-fuel battery-hybrid RoPax ferries, GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE and SAINT-MALO.

The project, funded with GBP 19.8 million from Department for Transport, United Kingdom and GBP 4.6 million from Portsmouth City Council, has been a huge undertaking alongside many partners, including: Among others, Brittany Ferries, UKRI - Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge (IDC), University of Portsmouth, MSE International, Swanbarton Limited, B4T, Balfour Beatty plc, Attis Engineering Solutions Ltd., ABB, ShoreLink, Zinus AS.
