AML secures MONTE EXPRESS for OPE 2026
FerryAfrica Morocco Link (AML) has chartered the ferry MONTE EXPRESS from UME Shipping ahead of OPE 2026. OPE, short for Operación Paso del Estrecho (“Operation Crossing the Strait”), is the annual peak travel season during which North African migrant workers return from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar to their home countries for summer holidays.
The period runs from 15 June to 15 September. The 1991-built MONTE EXPRESS, with capacity for 528 passengers and 1,630 lane metres, was acquired by UME Shipping in May this year from Corsica Linea.
Under its previous name, MONTE D’ORO, the ferry had become surplus following Corsica Linea’s purchase of KALLISTE (now named CAPU DI MARU) from La Méridionale. AML currently operates two routes: Tangier–Tarifa and Tangier Med–Algeciras.
