AIDA Cruises completes major AIDALUNA refit and fleet modernization

CruiseAIDA Cruises successfully concluded a seven-week refurbishment of the cruise ship AIDALUNA at the Chantier Naval shipyard in Marseille, France. The project, running from 23 October to 8 December 2025, represents the second phase of the "AIDA Evolution" initiative aimed at modernisation of the company's Selection-class fleet.

The extensive maintenance period focused on technical upgrades, energy efficiency, and a comprehensive overhaul of all guest and crew areas, involving approximately 2,200 specialists.

Technical and Sustainability Upgrades

The refit incorporated several technical and circular economy innovations:

  • Circular Economy: Fully recycled carpet underlays, made from old carpets from AIDALUNA and AIDADIVA, were installed—a project that received the "Sustainable Product of the Year" award at the Cruise Ship Interiors (CSI) trade fair on 4 December 2025. A total of 45,000 square metres of carpet and over 1,000 mattresses were processed for recycling.
  • Energy Efficiency: The ship received several efficiency upgrades, including a pilot project testing transparent solar films on the pool deck, installation of a new reverse osmosis system for improved water production efficiency, and optimisation of the cooling water system via new box coolers.
  • IT and Hull: 40.5 km of new data cabling (fibre optic and copper) modernised the IT infrastructure. A biocide-free hull coating was applied to reduce friction and subsequent fuel consumption.

Guest Area Modernisation

Interior work focused on modernisation and expansion of key amenities:

  • Accommodation: All cabins and suites were refurbished, including the addition of new stern suites with private sun decks.
  • Public Areas: The ship now features ten restaurants and 13 bars, including new concepts such as French Kiss, East Fusion, and the Yacht Club. The Theatrium was technologically upgraded, and a new Fun Park and redesigned Kids Club were introduced for families.
  • Exclusive Spaces: A new suite lounge and a new Sky Deck area, complete with whirlpools, were created for suite guests.

The vessel began its first post-refit voyage on 10 December 2025, operating a five-day route in the Western Mediterranean. Subsequent modernisation projects under the AIDA Evolution initiative include AIDABELLA (January to March 2026) and AIDAMAR (late 2026).
