Irish Continental Group (ICG) issued a trading update which covers carryings for the year to date to 6 May 2023 and financial information for the first four months of 2023, i.e. 1 January to 30 April with comparisons against the corresponding period in 2022.

Ferries Division

Total revenues recorded in the period to 30 April amounted to EUR 106.9 million (2022: EUR 98.3 million) (including intra-division charter income), an 8.7% increase on the prior year.

For the year to 6 May, Irish Ferries carried 129,600 cars, an increase of 5.9% on the previous year. Freight carryings were 229,200 ro-ro units, an increase of 3.2% compared with 2022.

Names announced for new CMAL Islay vessels

Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has announced ISLE OF ISLAY and LOCH INDAAL as the names for the two new ferries to serve Islay and Jura following a public vote.

Over 1,300 votes were cast, with ISLE OF ISLAY being the most popular name, and LOCH INDAAL and PIONEER in close second and third place.

Revenues amounted to SEK 362.9 million (495.1) in Q1 2023 for Gotlandsbolaget. The costs amounted to SEK -425.8 million (-593.6). Revenues and costs during the quarter are lower than the previous year mainly as a result of items relating to Stockholms Reparationsvarv and Hansa Destinations being included, as well as for the four product tankers that were sold in autumn 2022. Adjusted operating profit amounted to SEK -62.9 million (-98.5).

Norled signed major contract with Brødrene Aa for three electric high-speed ferries with battery exchange solution

Norled signed a contract with Brødrene Aa for the construction of three new 45m electric fast ferries, the single largest contract ever for Brødrene Aa and worth over NOK 420m.

The three ferries will be equipped with the battery exchange solution SHIFTR, a system where battery packs are exchanged at scheduled calls and are replaced with fully charged battery packs that are taken on board. The system is designed to be able to swap out two empty batteries with fully charged batteries in about three minutes.

CalMac’s chartered catamaran ALFRED finally enters service

CalMac’s chartered catamaran ferry ALFRED finally entered service on the company’s Ardrossan to Brodick service on 12 May, becoming the second vessel on the route. The catamaran, owned by another Scottish ferry operator Pentland Ferries has been chartered by Transport Scotland for nine months, at a cost of GBP 9 million, to add resilience to Scotland’s largest ferry operator’s west coast service.

AG EMS selects Hogia Ferry Systems

German ferry operator Aktien-Gesellschaft EMS (“AG EMS”) has partnered with Hogia Ferry Systems to implement their standard reservation software BOOKIT.

Princess Cruises revealed the name of its second Sphere Class cruise ship – STAR PRINCESS, which will sail an inaugural season of Mediterranean voyages when she debuts in August 2025.
