Baleària’s hybrid electric H2 Ready ferry CAP DE BARBARIA delivered

Baleària’s Ibiza to Formentera ferry CAP DE BARBARIA has been delivered from Armon de Vigo shipyard. The hybrid electric ferry can achieve zero emissions in approaches and stays in port and is H2 Ready.

CAP DE BARBARIA is 82 metres long and 15.5 metres wide and is able to navigate at up to 14 knots. It can transport up to 240 lm of cargo-approximately 14 trucks- and 390 passengers. The double ended design and a 360 degree azimuth electric propulsion allow great agility in loading and unloading operations and in manoeuvres.

The CAP DE BARBARIA begins its services as H2 Ready, that is, prepared to be able to install a hydrogen system with a 200 kW cell, a storage capacity that would allow its use for 24 hours and the supply of 30% of the required energy by the ship..

Methane slip from state-of-the-art LNG-powered vessels – the AURORA BOTNIA case

Researchers from VTT recently studied methane slip* of two Wärtsilä 31DF engines onboard Wasaline’s AURORA BOTNIA - one in standard configuration and the other piloting a new combustion concept by Wärtsilä. The study showed that overall methane emissions were lower than previous onboard studies have reported. Results also indicate that the upgraded engine technology has great potential to reduce overall emissions (including both CO2 and methane).

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s new GBP 78 million ro-pax ferry MANXMAN has been delivered from South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The delivery voyage will take approximately 30 days, followed by a stop on the South Coast of England for final fittings.

MANXMAN will enter service on the Douglas-Heysham route, across the Irish Sea, and has been built as the larger replacement for BEN-MY-CHREE. It can carry 949 passengers compared to 630 for the latter.

DFDS Q1 2023 financials and April volumes released

DFDS reported Q1 revenue up with 9% to DKK 6.3bn and EBITDA up 23% to DKK 1.0bn. Passenger numbers continued to increase, while a slowdown in freight was seen.

The number of passengers continued to recover and increased 22.3% to 406,000 equal to 84% of volumes in April 2019, the latest comparable month pre-Covid-19. The number of cars equalled 79% of volumes in 2019.

Total freight volumes in April 2023 were 18.7% below 2022. Volumes were 7.7% below 2022 adjusted for Channel that is impacted by a general market decrease and overcapacity.

Höegh Aurora class PCTC

Höegh Autoliners and Norwegian green energy provider North Ammonia announced a partnership for future supply, distribution, delivery, and consumption of green ammonia to the eight 9,100 CEU capacity Aurora class PCTC’s that will be delivered starting from the second half of 2024.

The partnership will enable Höegh Autoliners to meet their commitment to powering at least 5% of their deep-sea operation with green ammonia by 2030 (part of their First Movers Coalition pledge) and their aim of consuming at least 100 000 metric tonnes of green ammonia within their fleet by that same year.

Tenders called for the construction of new ro-ro and ferry port in Cagliari

The Sardinian port of Cagliari is moving forward into a major modernisation programme. The Port Authority of the Sea of Sardinia has called for tenders for the construction of a new ro-ro and ferry port, outside of the existing facility in the historic port, for the Port Canale of Cagliari.

The new port will cost EUR 298 million to build, with construction taking place over five years.

Baleària charters ro-pax VISBORG to operate between Almeria and Nador

Spanish ferry operator Baleària has chartered Destination Gotland’s ro-pax VISBORG to operate between Almeria and Nador during OPE 2023.
The 2003-built VISBORG is due to arrive in Almeria on 15 May from Klaipeda.

Stena Line boosts freight capacity on Irish Sea with two all-new “NewMax” hybrid ro-ro’s

Two all-new hybrid propulsion ro-ro vessels designed to run on methanol and adding 80% capacity on the Belfast-Heysham route will respond to increasing customer demand for capacity and sustainability performance for Stena Line. Construction of the “NewMax” vessels will begin shortly with launch on the Irish Sea in 2025.

Stena Line has announced that it is constructing two new bespoke freight vessels for its expanding Belfast-Heysham freight service. Each of the two new NAOS designed 147-metre vessels has been designed to maximise freight volumes and will provide 2,800 lane meters of capacity, which is an 80% increase on current ship capacities.

Fincantieri Q1 2023 results

Q1 results in line with FY 2023 guidance. Revenues at EUR 1,764 million, up by 4.9% compared to Q1 2022. EBITDA at EUR 87 million with an EBITDA margin at 4.9% (vs 3.0 as of 31 December 2022). Net Financial Position at EUR 2,922 million (EUR 2,531 million on 31 December 2022), in line with production volumes for the period and delivery schedule, with two cruise ships delivered in April.

The Finnlines Group recorded revenue totalling EUR 163.1 million (EUR 157.0 million) in Q1, while EBITDA ended at EUR 45.5 million (EUR 35.6 million).
176,000 (199,000) cargo units, 43,000 (36,000) cars (not including passengers’ cars) and 338,000 (374,000) tonnes of freight not possible to measure in units were transported. In addition, some 126,000 (117,000) private and commercial passengers were transported.

A dining concept for Finnlines’ new ships: ”Each portion of food must have a story behind it”

Locally, in the Archipelago, grown food flavoured with Mediterranean spices is the essence of the menus. Kespro is the new partner responsible for food service supplies for Finnlines’ ships operating between Finland and Sweden. Finnlines’ new freight-passenger ships in the Superstar class, which will enter the Naantali-Långnäs-Kapellskär route in the autumn, offer a traditional buffet but also a wide range of culinary delights, both food and beverages.

Tallink Grupp published its unaudited financial results for Q1 of 2023. Net loss reduced to EUR 5.4 million (net loss of EUR 40 million in Q1 2022). The group’s unaudited consolidated revenue ended at EUR 171.2 million (EUR 106.1 million in Q1 2022), while EBITDA reached EUR 27.1 million (EUR –11 million).

Wallenius and Greencarrier launch the new company Lakeway Link

Wallenius and Greencarrier announced the establishment of Lakeway Link, a new company aimed at reducing heavy traffic by offering extended waterway transport. Thanks to new vessels maximised for the new ship standard, Mälarmax, Lakeway Link will offer more sustainable regular traffic for ro-ro and high and heavy between Lake Mälaren and Poland.

Lakeway Link will traffic the Polish cities of Gdynia and Gdansk to and from Södertälje and Västerås via Lake Mälaren. With the founding of the company, a more sustainable regular service will be opened with fixed departures twice a week from Sweden and Poland, starting at the end of the year.

Royal Caribbean Group Q1 2023 financials were stronger than anticipated with total revenues of USD 2.9 bn (USD 1.06 bn), Net Loss was USD 47.9 million (USD 1.17 bn), Adjusted EBITDA was USD 641.7 million (USD -549.7 million), and 1,806,270 (734,809) passengers were carried.

NOCC Announces Investment Advised by J.P. Morgan Global Alternative’s Global Transportation Group

Norwegian Car Carriers AS (NOCC) announced that institutional investors advised by J.P. Morgan Global Alternative’s Global Transportation Group have acquired 50% of the company from Klaveness Marine, taking their ownership to 100%. At the same time, NOCC acquired all minority shares in NOCC Atlantic DIS and became 100% owner of the NOCC ATLANTIC. NOCC has a fleet of three Panamax size Pure Car Truck Carriers (about 6,500 CEU capacity) all chartered out on long term charters.

MAN 175D engine now biofuel-ready

MAN Energy Solutions has announced that its MAN 175D engine is formally approved for operation on biofuels, effective immediately. This applies to all standard biofuels such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) fuels up to a content of 100%. Crucially, the engine itself does not require any technical adjustments.

Interferry Regulatory Report – Efficacy of Drencher Systems in Relation to Battery Electric Vehicle Fires

Concerns have been raised over ferries carrying Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) as there have been instances of catastrophic failure in the vehicle’s battery pack, resulting in fires that cannot be extinguished. The efficacy of conventional seawater drencher systems in relation to BEV fires has been evaluated under the auspices of LASH FIRE, an EU research project aimed to significantly reduce the risk of fires on board ro-ro ships by developing and validating effective operative and design solutions. Interferry is a member of the LASH FIRE project which runs from September 2019 to August 2023.

GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE, the name of Brittany Ferries’ next hybrid ship

Brittany Ferries has officially announced (although revealed at this year's Shippax Ferry Conference) the name of its forthcoming hybrid ship, which will sail between Portsmouth and Caen. GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE will be the joint-largest hybrid vessel at sea when she joins the Brittany Ferries fleet in May 2025, sailing alongside sister-ship SAINT-MALO.

She will also be the fourth vessel in the fleet to be fuelled by LNG. Powered by two 13,740 kW engines, she will be configured to run on LNG, on battery power or on a combination of the two in hybrid mode.

GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE will replace Brittany Ferries’ NORMANDIE.

CEVA Logistics to operate four deep-sea, dual-fuel hybrid ro-ro vessels under long-term lease

CEVA Logistics is connecting its global automotive customers with more ro-ro vessel capacity thanks to a new 10-year lease the logistics firm has signed with its parent company, CMA CGM. The agreement for four of Eastern Pacific Shipping’s LNG dual-fuel hybrid deep-sea vessels will allow CEVA to transport approximately 140,000 vehicles annually between global markets, especially China and Europe.
