AS Tallinna Sadam (Port of Tallinn) operational volumes for 2023 Q1

In 2023 Q1, 3.4 million tonnes of cargo and 1.4 million passengers passed through the harbours of Tallinna Sadam. Compared to the same period of previous year, the number of passengers increased by 55% i.e. 494,000 passengers whereas the cargo volume decreased by 31%. The number of vessel calls increased by 4% to 1,717 calls. The number of passengers travelling between the Estonian mainland and the main islands increased by 8% and the number of vehicles by 2%.

Tallink Grupp signs long-term charter agreement with Irish Continental Group for STAR

Tallink Grupp has signed an agreement with Irish Continental Group plc for the long-term charter of the company’s shuttle vessel STAR. The vessel will be bareboat chartered out for 20 months with the possibility to extend the charter by 2+2 years and with a purchase option.

STAR is chartered to Irish Continental Group plc from 5 May 2023 and will initially enter service as OSCAR WILDE for Irish Ferries on the Rosslare / Pembroke route in early June, replacing the chartered BLUE STAR 1 for the busy summer period. BLUE STAR 1 has been chartered from Blue Star Ferries for the last two years.

Hakodate-based Seikan Ferry's new ro-pax, HAYABUSA II entered service on the Hakodate-Aomori route on 4 April 2023. HAYABUSA II was the first car ferry built by Japanese Hakodate Dock in 22 years.

The vessel measures 115m in length, has a beam of 19 meters and draft of 4.80 meters. She has two Daihatsu main engines and can carry up to 300 passengers and 44 cars at a service speed of 19 knots.

Taiwan bound PENGHU launched in Japan

A new ro-pax ferry for Taiwan Navigation was launched at Naikai Zosen Setoda shipyard in Onomichi, Hiroshima prefecture, Japan. The new ro-pax named PENGHU is scheduled to enter service between Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Magong, Penghu Island in September 2023.

PENGHU measures about 119.99 meters, with a beam of 21.00 meters and draft of 8.00 meters. She can carry up to 632 passengers, as well as 80 cars.

Leclanché signs contract to supply battery systems for CMAL Islay ferries

Leclanché has been selected to supply its battery technology for two hybrid ferries being built for Scotland’s Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) at Cemre shipyard in Turkey.

elkon, part of the SCHOTTEL Group and an electrical systems integrator for the marine industry has awarded Leclanché with the contract for two Navius MRS-3TM 1.1 MWh capacity battery storage systems.

The second of two new electric ferries for Molslinjen put into production

Cemre Shipyard, together with representatives from Molslinjen, started the construction of Samsølinjen’s new electric ferry with a traditional steel cut ceremony.

The OSK-ShipTech-designed all-electric ferry will be 116.8 metres long, have a capacity for 600 passengers and 188 cars and will serve the Ballen - Kalundborg route in Denmark.

It will be prepared for autonomous sailing between ports – with automatic docking and charging at the quay and will have Echandia batteries with a 3.8 MWh capacity which can be fully charged in 20-25 minutes.

An autonomous, 3D printed electric ferry in Paris for the summer of 2024

Athletes and visitors from around the world will have the opportunity to be crossing the Seine with a 3D printed, autonomous, electric passenger ferry for the Summer Olympics of 2024. Together with partners Sequana Développement and Roboat, Holland Shipyards Group has been designated a winner in a countrywide call for projects in the field of autonomous decarbonated passenger boats.

AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for March 2023 and Q1 2023

In March 2023 AS Tallink Grupp transported 355,787 passengers, which is a 17.3% increase compared to March 2022. The number of cargo units decreased by 13.8% to 32,566 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 2.5% to 55,616 units in the same comparison.

In the first quarter of 2023 (January-March) AS Tallink Grupp transported 1,049,777 passengers, which is a 45.7% increase compared to the same period a year ago. The number of cargo units decreased by 14.9% to 86,732 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 12.3% to 157,639 units in the same comparison.

MacGregor has received a significant ro-ro equipment repeat order for Grimaldi Group's Pure Car and Truck Carriers

MacGregor has received a significant repeat order with a total value of more than EUR 20 million for comprehensive packages of ro-ro equipment for a total of five Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) vessels. These vessels will be built at China Merchant Heavy Industries for Grimaldi Group. This deal will extend MacGregor’s supply of ro-ro equipment from five to ten of Grimaldi’s new PCTC vessels.

The orders were booked into Cargotec’s 2023 first quarter orders received. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered to the shipowner between the third quarter of 2024 and the third quarter of 2026.

Swan Hellenic took delivery of SH DIANA from the Helsinki Shipyard on Friday 31 March. Swan Hellenic’s newest and largest ship is en-route in the Baltic and will pass through the Kiel Canal tomorrow night.

Survitec Marine Evacuation Systems selected for 11 F-Flexers

11 Stena RoRo LNG-fuelled E-Flexer ferries scheduled for charter to European and Canadian operators will each feature advanced Marine Evacuation Systems (MES) supplied by global Survival Technology solutions provider Survitec.

Survitec has already delivered three shipsets of the evacuation systems, with MES successfully installed and commissioned aboard two extended 240m long, 1200 passenger capacity E-Flexers STENA ESTELLE and STENA EBBA. STENA EBBA began operations on Stena Line's Sweden-Poland route in January 2023.

Gotlandsbolaget signed LOI with Austal for GOTLAND HORIZON X project and sells GOTLANDIA II

Gotlandsbolaget and Austal have signed a letter of intent to enter into an agreement for the design of Gotlandsbolaget's new catamaran. GOTLAND HORIZON X is a high-speed catamaran that with a multi-fuel solution will be able to run on for instance hydrogen and is planned to be used in Gotland traffic.

GOTLAND HORIZON X will become 130 m long and will be able to travel at 35 knots, carry 1,650 passengers and have space for 450 passenger cars.

GOTLANDIA II sold to Golden Star Ferries
It has now been confirmed that Greece's Golden Star Ferries have bought the 2006-built monohull high-speed vessel GOTLANDIA II from Gotlandsbolaget.

Incat Crowther 53 KILIMANJARO VIII delivered to Tanzania

KILIMANJARO VIII, a new 53-metre passenger ferry designed by Incat Crowther and built by Hobart-based shipyard Richardson Devine Marine, has been handed over to Azam Marine of Tanzania.

KILIMANJARO VIII is the 11th Incat Crowther-designed vessel for Azam Marine and the eighth built by Richardson Devine Marine.  

The vessel is larger than its predecessor, KILIMANJARO VII, and is capable of transporting up to 620 passengers at speeds in excess of 30 knots.
