Italy’s Navigazione Libera del Golfo (NLG) has bought the Kværner Fjellstrand Jumbo Cat IRIS I from Greeces Plaxiven Consulting. The sale price is believed to be just over EUR 5 million.

With her new Naples-based Italian owners, IRIS I will be renamed SANTA LUCIA and operate between Termoli and the Tremiti islands. The 1999-built Jumbo Cat can carry 428 passengers and 49 cars at speeds up to 40 knots.

DANOF, a consortium consisting of Danish naval architecture and engineering company Hauschildt Marine and Norwegian fjord ferry specialist Multi Maritime has been appointed by Læsø Kommune to work on a replacement ferry for MARGRETE LÆSØ.

On 25 January, Torghatten Nord signed a contract worth NOK 4.98 billion (approximately EUR 496 million) with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen) for ferry services between Bodø - Røst - Værøy - Moskenes.

The operation will start on 1 October 2025 and last for 15 years for this route which is the longest domestic ferry route in Norway with a trip duration of 3.5 hours.

Torghatten Nord partnered with the Norwegian Ship Design Company (NSDC) which designed a pair of innovative 120m long double-ended ferries that are able to accommodate 120 cars and 699 passengers each. Hydrogen consumption per day is expected to be in the range of 5 to 6 tons.

The 2002-built FERRY KYOTO 2 has been sold by City Line (partly owned by MOL) to S.Korean interests. The ship left Shinmoji 18 January and reached Busan 19 January.

New name is HANIL CARFERRY NO.1, suggesting the buyer is Hanil Express.

Melilla public service contracts up for renewal

The Ministry for Transport has released the conditions for the renewal of the Public Service Contracts to Melilla, which will come into force on 1 April 2022. Similar to those issued in 2021, the contracts are divided into two lots, Lot 1 being Malaga – Melilla and Lot 2 being Almeria / Motril – Melilla.

The amount being offered is the same for Lot 1, namely EUR 3.9 million, with the amount offered for Lot 2 being reduced slightly from EUR 7.5 million to EUR 7.25 million. The service requirements are the same as those for 2021, namely six sailings a week from Malaga, and three each from Almeria and Motril. This year the contracts also allow the eventual winners to renew at their option for a further year, i.e., 2023-24.

Finnlines introduces a larger vessel to operate between Finland and Sweden and upgrades services to cargo carriers and private passengers. The Star class ro-pax vessels FINNSWAN and EUROPALINK will jointly start on the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route, departing in the evening from both Naantali and Kapellskär.

Damen Shipyards to build four RoPax ferries for Penang Port Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia

Damen Shipyards has been contracted by Penang Port Sdn Bhd., Malaysia, to build up to five RoPax ferries to replace the current fleet that has reached its end of life. The new vessels have been specially designed to meet the requirements of the client and its passengers. They will operate on the ferry route that links the Malaysian Peninsula (Butterworth) with Penang Island and its city of George Town, Malaysia’s third largest, just a ten minute journey away.

Diligent environmental and sustainability work shows sharp reductions in CO2 emissions, which means that Denmark's and Sweden's targets set for 2030 will be met as early as 2022.

• 99.81% of all planned sailing trips in the timetable have been completed.
• 8.5% more freight transports compared with 2020 and + 3.5% against the normal year 2019
• 12% more passengers compared to 2020
• 13% increase in sales in stores on board compared with the normal year 2019

Viking Line's new VIKING GLORY will start its service on the Stockholm - Åland - Turku route 1 March and replace AMORELLA. AMORELLA will start its service between Stockholm and Helsinki on 1 April, which means that Viking Line will once again operate with two vessels on the route.

Three new LNG-fuelled Ro-Pax vessels being built for Swedish ferry operator Stena RoRo will feature a broad scope of Wärtsilä solutions. The ships are under construction at China Merchants Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard and will operate with Wärtsilä engines and propulsion machinery when delivered in 2024 and 2025. The order was booked with Wärtsilä in Q4 2021.

SunStone Ships announced keel laying ceremony on the sixth INFINITY CLASS vessel OCEAN ALBATROS

SunStone Ships, the world’s largest tonnage provider to the expedition cruise industry, announces the successful keel laying of the OCEAN ALBATROS, the sixth vessel in their series of INFINITY CLASS new-builds. INFINITY Class Vessels are 104 meters long, and 18 meters wide, having a draft of 5.1 meters. They feature a passenger capacity between 130 and 200 and a crew capacity between 85 and 115.

The ship has left behind the red of the old shipping company to give way to blue, characteristic of Grimaldi, as the predominant color both on the funnel and on both sides, where the Grimaldi Trasmed label appears.

After spending about a month in the shipyard of La Spezia (Italy), the CIUDAD DE PALMA not only renewed its external image but has also used the yard visit for the installation of scrubbers and refurbishments and improvements of the cabins as well as public spaces.

Deltamarin signs an engineering contract for Höegh Autoliners Aurora Class PCTCs

Deltamarin has signed an agreement with China Merchants Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. for the design and engineering of the new series of Höegh Autoliners Aurora Class Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTCs).

Deltamarin has recently the completed conceptual design of the ships for Höegh Autoliners. The engineering contract signed with the builder, CMI Jiangsu shipyard, is a direct continuation of the work and includes complete basic and detail design of the vessels.

European shipowners support EU parliamentary proposal on commercial operators and a sector-dedicated fund

European shipowners welcome the proposal of the European Parliament’s Rapporteur on the EU ETS, MEP Peter Liese, to introduce a requirement for a binding clause in contractual agreements between shipowners and commercial operators and to ensure that the latter pay for the costs of the EU ETS. ECSA also supports the proposal of the Rapporteur to create a sector-dedicated fund and to allocate at least 75% of the revenues generated by the shipping allowances to this fund.

Scandinavian Biogas invests 300 million SEK in northern Europes largest plant for Bio-LNG

In the second half of 2023, the expanded plant in Gladö Kvarn on Södertörn just south of Stockholm for the production of liquefied biogas (Bio-LNG) is expected to be completed. The plant will produce 220 GWh of Bio-LNG per year, making it the largest of its kind in northern Europe. The former largest plant is Norwegian Skogn, which is also owned by Scandinavian Biogas. By comparison, 220 GWh corresponds to an energy volume of 22 million liters of diesel.
