Northern Xplorer signs LOI with West Sea Shipyard to build world’s first zero-emission cruise ship

Recently established Norwegian cruise venture and Portuguese shipbuilder West Sea today signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the construction of the company’s maiden vessel, with expected delivery at the start of the 2025/2026 cruise season.

West Sea intends to build the 250-passenger vessel at its facility in Viana do Costello north of Porto. Its cruise newbuilding portfolio to date includes the 200-passenger WORLD NAVIGATOR (built 2021), WORLD VOYAGER (built 2020) and WORLD EXPLORER (built 2019), the first three in a series of seven high-end polar expedition vessels for a renowned luxury cruise operator.

The FRS Baltic high-speed ferry SKÅNE JET has been operating between Sassnitz and Ystad since 2020. For the start of the 2023 season, there will now be a change of course and the new port of destination will be Trelleborg.

SKÅNE JET can carry more than 600 passengers and up to 200 vehicles and can go between Germany to Sweden in just 2.5 hour.

First ship to be built in Kenya – the train ferry UHURU II – floated out at Kisumu Shipyard on Lake Victoria

What is being claimed as the first ship yet to be built totally in the East African country of Kenya, by Kenyans, the 100m train ferry UHURU II, has been floated at the newly upgraded Kisumu Shipyard, on Lake Victoria, for Kenya Railways Corp.

The 1,800 dwt, 100m UHURU II will join the 1966-built, 1,260 tonne, 91m train ferry UHURU I later this year carrying crude oil rail waggons on the regular service across Lake Victoria.

Informall BG cargo analytical bureau studied the Black Sea ro-ro & ro-pax market identifying the influence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the regional transport industry.
A considerable part of regional Black Sea trade between Ukraine, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia was carried out via ro-ro vessels that were shipping trucks, various vehicles and rail wagons shore-to-shore, year around, however, the Black Sea has seen its ferry services coming to a virtual standstill since the end of February 2022.

Construction of Brittany Ferries first LNG-hybrid vessel initiated

On 5 September a plasma blade cut the first piece of steel to SAINT-MALO, Brittany Ferries first LNG-hybrid vessel which will join the fleet in 2025 and replace the 1989-built BRETAGNE on the company’s route between Portsmouth in the UK and Ouistreham (Caen) and St. Malo in France.

SAINT-MALO will be equipped with a large battery hybrid package for energy consumption of 10 MWh for propulsion and manoeuvring in port. It will also be equipped with an 8 MW electric shore connection for charging the batteries which entails an environmentally friendly stay in port. The large battery capacity enables speeds up to 17.5 knots on battery power alone.

Baleària's zero emission battery hybrid double-ender named CAP DE BARBARIA

CAP DE BARBARIA will the name of the zero emission battery hybrid double-ender ferry Baleària are building at Astilleros Armón for its Ibiza-Formentera route. Cape Barbaria, or Cap de Barbaria, is a cape that marks the south-western end of the island of Formentera.

The new hybrid ferry will be able to carry 350 passengers and 14 trucks and will be a zero emission vessel while entering and leaving port and manoeuvring. Delivery of the ferry is expected in time for the summer season 2023.

Rolls-Royce receives order for nine mtu hybrid propulsion packs for nine new Liberty Lines fast crafts

Rolls-Royce has received an order from the Spanish shipyard Armon to supply nine mtu Hybrid Propulsion Packs for nine new ships of the leading Italian high-speed maritime passenger transport company, Liberty Lines. The vessels are scheduled to enter service between 2023 and 2026.

Color Line improves the energy efficiency of its vessels with Elogrid

Color Line has ordered the Elogrid solution from Elomatic for two of its passenger car ferries to improve their energy efficiency. The Elogrid grid design for thruster openings reduces the additional resistance of vessels. This reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Elogrid also enhances the performance of thruster tunnels, which leads to better maneuverability.

Norwegian shipping company Color Line has ordered the Elogrid solution developed by Elomatic for its SUPERSPEED 1 and SUPERSPEED 2 passenger car ferries.

Rolls-Royce is setting another milestone on the road to climate-neutral shipping with the approval of its Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu marine diesel engines in 2023 for use with sustainable fuels. Following successful bench and field tests, the Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems will gradually be approving its Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu marine engines for EN15940 synthetic diesel fuels from the beginning of 2023.

The new VIKING GLORY enticed a larger share of younger adults to enjoy holiday travel at sea, and an all-time passenger record on the Turku-Mariehamn-Stockholm route was the icing on the cake for Viking Line’s splendid summer. When VIKING GLORY launched service on the Turku-Mariehamn-Stockholm route in March, the prediction at Viking Line was that the new vessel would lead to an upturn in traffic on the route but also increase interest in Turku, Åland and Stockholm as destinations. That turned out to be the case too, as more than 740,000 people travelled with VIKING GLORY and VIKING GRACE between June and August. A total of nearly two million passengers sailed on all of Viking Line’s vessels during the three summer months.

Cross-industry collaboration to make the Port of Gothenburg Europe's first green e-fuels hub

Canadian Ferry Association set to meet in late September

After a three-year hiatus, the Canadian Ferry Association (CFA) is meeting in Gatineau/Ottawa from September 25-27.

The conference, attended by between 200-300 people in the past, attracts people from Canada but also from all over the world – Europe, United States, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

The Grenå-Halmstad and Frederikshavn-Gothenburg ferry routes have become an attractive route between Denmark and Sweden. New figures from Stena Line show a 229 per cent increase in the number of passengers on the two routes in July compared to the same period last year.

On 3 September 2022, a ceremony was held to name the new vessel on the Gdynia-Karlskrona line. Champagne was broken on the side of the STENA ESTELLE ferry by the Deputy Mayor of Gdynia for Economy, Katarzyna Gruszecka-Spychala, the ship's godmother.

STENA ESTELLE is one of the largest ferries in the Baltic Sea in regular operation. It is 240 metres long, offers space for 1,200 people and can accommodate up to 200 trucks on 3,600 metres of car decks.

Portland Port undertakes GBP 26 million berth development

Portland Port is embarking on its largest and most ambitious improvement project to date, investing GBP 26 million in a major berth development.
The port has applied for, and had approved, all the necessary permissions to carry out the project. The development will see the existing Deep Water Berth (DWB) removed, and replaced with a brand new, extended berth. In addition, the works will deliver a 74m extension to the solid quay face of our current primary cruise berth, the Outer Coaling Pier (OCP).

Deltamarin wins a design contract for a new Estonian ferry

Deltamarin has signed a contract with the Estonian Transport Administration to develop a new concept for a ferry travelling between the big islands and the mainland. The concept is expected to be completed in early 2023. The concept will be the basis for preparing a public procurement and further designing and constructing the ferry.

Ecospray takes further orders from Ruhe Group - Green Line Liquid for biomethane production and liquefaction plants in Germany

Ecospray, the engineering company which is participated by Costa Crociere and is a member of the Carnival Group, has signed an important agreement with Green Line Liquid Anlagenbau for the creation of three new bio-LNG plants in Germany.

Wärtsilä and CLdN cooperate in building of innovative hybrid RoRo vessels

The technology group Wärtsilä and logistics provider CLdN have jointly developed an innovative hybrid design for two new RoRo vessels. The propulsion arrangement is such that the ships can operate as gas/diesel-mechanical vessel now, or in the future as gas/diesel-electric vessel. The vessels are being built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyards in Korea.

Launch of Wärtsilä 25 engine paves the way towards maritime decarbonisation

The technology group Wärtsilä introduces its new Wärtsilä 25 medium-speed 4-stroke engine. Based on Wärtsilä’s highly successful modular technology platform, this latest addition to the company’s engine portfolio is designed to accelerate and support the maritime sector’s efforts in achieving decarbonised operations.

Danfoss Power Solutions and TESYA Group join forces to boost marine electrification

Danfoss Power Solutions’ Editron division and TESYA Group, a global solution provider and Caterpillar dealer, have signed a cooperation agreement to accelerate the electrification of the marine industry in Southern Europe. The agreement comes as the Mediterranean region is seeing an increasing demand for hybrid and fully electric vessels.

Strong recovery in Sweden for international ferry traffic in the second quarter

During the second quarter of 2022, the total number of passengers in Swedish ports was 6.8 million, an increase of 105 percent compared to the same quarter in 2021. The rate of increase was significantly higher for foreign traffic than for Gotland ferries, which had an increase of 22 percent. Passenger traffic to and from Finland increased by over 300 percent and contributed the most to the total increase, according to new preliminary official statistics from Trafikanalys.

AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for August 2022

In August 2022 AS Tallink Grupp transported 603 284 passengers, which is an 54.8% increase compared to August 2021. The number of cargo units increased by 23.4% to 35 530 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 14% to 89 105 units in the same comparison.

Wärtsilä and Maersk collaborate in developing unique ‘pipe in pipe’ solution to prevent scrubber discharge pipe corrosion

The technology group Wärtsilä and Danish ship operator A.P. Moller - Maersk have provided a means for preventing corrosion in scrubber discharge pipes. The permanent in-pipe solution is designed to solve corrosion problems associated with open-loop scrubber washwater discharge.
