Finnlines in advanced discussions to start new Zeebrugge-Rosslare Europoort freight ro-ro service in July

Reports emanating from the Republic of Ireland suggest that Finnlines is to start a new direct freight ro-ro service between Zeebrugge and Rosslare Europoort this July.
Irish road haulier Nolan Freight claims that it has been instrumental in persuading Finnlines to start the new service, which initially, says Kevin Nolan, will offer two weekly round-trips between Belgium and the Republic of Ireland, with options for additional capacity.
In response to speculation about this new service, Glenn Carr, general manager of Rosslare Europoort has confirmed that port management are in advanced discussions with Finnlines about a possible new connection between the Co. Wexford port and Zeebrugge.

CalMac takes delivery of its latest fleet addition – the double-ender LOCH FRISA

The latest ferry to join Scotland’s largest ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), LOCH FRISA, has joined the fleet in Oban after completing a major upgrade project in Leith. Subject to completing successful sea trials and berthing trials, the 49.9m 2015-built double-ender LOCH FRISA will enter service on the Oban-Craignure route to the isle of Mull in mid-June.

FINNECO III, the third of three 5,800 lanemetre ro-ro vessels in the Eco class was delivered to Finnlines from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) in China on 6 June 2022. The vessel will enter Finnlines’ Biscay line, where it will join the sister vessels, FINNECO I and II.
FINNECO I was delivered 28 April and FINNECO II 30 May.
The ships are 238 metres long, each with a cargo capacity of 5,800 lanemetres. Consequently, the vessels can carry 400 trailers per voyage. Compared with the largest vessels in today’s Finnlines fleet, the cargo carrying capacity of the hybrid newbuilds will increase by nearly 40%.

On 9 June, the Port of Gothenburg AB's acquisition of a 108,000 square meter area in Arendal in the Port of Gothenburg was completed. The purpose of the acquisition is to enable a future relocation of Stena Line's Denmark and Germany terminals and to consolidate the port's ferry and ro-ro traffic to the outskirts of the harbour.

On 2 June Havila Kystruten`s HAVILA CASTOR proved it could sail in and out of the Geiranger fjord on zero-emission with help from the largest battery pack installed onboard a commercial vessel.
HAVILA CASTOR is one out of four identical ships built for Havila Kystruten to operate on the coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes in the North of Norway. The full roundtrip takes 11 days and is an epic journey through some of the most scenic and unspoiled nature. Corvus has delivered a complete 6.1 MWh Orca battery system for each of the vessels.

Seabourn announces the return of SEABOURN SOJOURN; entire Seabourn fleet back in service

Seabourn is celebrating the return of its entire fleet of ultra-luxury ships, with the departure of SEABOURN SOJOURN from Athens, Greece, 7 June.
The cruise line now has all five of its ships in operation for the first time since March 2020. This summer, SEABOURN SOJOURN will join SEABOURN ENCORE and SEABOURN QUEST in the Mediterranean, while SEABOURN OVATION will visit Northern Europe and SEABOURN ODYSSEY will explore Alaska. The excitement will continue for the line when SEABOURN VENTURE, the first of the line's two ultra-luxury, purpose-built expedition ships, embarks on its inaugural expedition this summer.

Wärtsilä Hybrid Propulsion System will future-proof 11 new Eastern Pacific PCTC vessels

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply its hybrid propulsion system for 11 new Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels. The ships are being built at the Jingling and Weihai shipyards in China for Singapore-based tonnage provider Eastern Pacific Shipping.
By opting for Wärtsilä’s hybrid solution, fuel efficiency will be optimised and emissions minimised. Furthermore, the system effectively provides future-proofing for the vessels since it has the built-in flexibility to adapt to future technology shifts. These may come in the form of alternative fuels, greater battery capacity, solar panels or fuel cell operation, all of which can easily be integrated into the Wärtsilä system.
First in the world: DFDS introduces eyes in the sky
As the first in the world, DFDS is introducing a drone support system as part of the equipment on commercial ships. The drone system will support the captains onboard when docking and sailing in narrow waters.
Continued recovery for international ferry traffic in Sweden in early 2022
During the first quarter of the year, January-March 2022, the total number of passengers in Swedish ports (all departing and arriving passengers) was 3.4 million, an increase of 94 percent compared to the same quarter in 2021. The rate of increase was significantly faster for international traffic than on the Gotland ferries. It shows new preliminary official statistics from Swedish Trafikanalys.
ABB to lead turnkey project for largest shore-to-ship solution in France
Port of Toulon, which handles over 1.6 million ferry and cruise passengers annually, has committed to ABB Shore Connection technology at a key stage in its sustainability drive.
With around 1,300 yearly calls from ferries and cruise vessels right in the heart of the city, the port of Toulon plays an important role in developing the attractiveness of the region for business and tourists. The port is also central to the “Zero-smoke stopovers” plan by the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (Région Sud PACA), which aims to electrify the docks of Toulon, Marseille and Nice to enable emission-free stays for vessels.
DNV signs MOU with Saronic Ferries on development of electric ferry concept in Greece
Classification society DNV have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Saronic Ferries designed to enable the development of an electric ferry for local deployment in Greece. The collaboration is targeted towards a fully electric concept for deployment on short sea passenger routes in the Argosaronikos area.
Royal Caribbean Group and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping have formalized their collaboration by signing a Partnership Agreement. With the agreement, Royal Caribbean Group becomes a Corporate Strategic Partner to the Center, committing to a long-term strategic collaboration and contribution to the development of zero carbon technologies and solutions for the maritime industry.
Horisont Energi, a clean energy and carbon transport and storage services provider, and Lhyfe, a pure player in renewable green hydrogen, announce they have entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint development of green ammonia-producing plants in Europe fed by green hydrogen plants.
