NORDLINK to become a swan
In preparation of her new role for FinnLink, the Star-Class NORDLINK will be renamed FINNSWAN at the end of this month.
New Baku ro-ro terminal inaugurated
On Tuesday 9 January, the Azerbaijan president, Ilham Aliyev, officially opened the new ro-ro terminal at the Baku International Sea Trade Port, situated in the Alyat settlement of Garadagh district.
CAROLINE RUSS temporarily on the Gothenburg-Kiel route
After having been replaced on the Hoek van Holland-Killingholme route by larger tonnage, CAROLINE RUSS continues her charter to Stena Line as the 1,625-lanemetre ro-ro freighter has now been introduced on the overnight service between Gothenburg and Kiel.

FRS acquires MIRANDA from Godby Shipping
FRS has released a press statement confirming what Shippax has earlier reported, notably that FRS, through its subsidiary Kekepania Shipping Company Limited, has acquired the ro-ro vessel MIRANDA for use on the company’s Motril-Tangier Med line.
Over ten million passengers for Port of Tallinn in 2017
10.56 million passengers travelled through the Port of Tallinn during 2017, a 4% increase on 2016 and the tenth consecutive year of record-breaking numbers.
Former Interferry CEO to run Kitsap Transit’s ferry operations
Kitsap Transit, a public transit agency serving Kitsap County, Washington with bus services, a foot ferry, a vanpool system, worker-driver services, and dial-a-ride services, has appointed Darrell Bryan to run the ferry business.

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft unveils more details about the TT-Line Tasmania pair
As reported yesterday, TT-Line Tasmania has signed an LoI with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) for the design and construction of two large ro-pax ferries that will be introduced on the Bass Strait come 2021.
FSG has released more details and a new rendering of the pair.
The ships' technical specs are as follows:

Hogia in the glimmer of the eastern Emerald
Hogia Ferry Systems have signed an agreement with Indonesian ro-ro operator PT Jagat Zamrud Khatulistiwa (JZK). This is Hogia’s first client in Indonesia, the beautiful country often called the Emerald of the Equator (“jagat zamrud khatulistiwa” in Indonesian) due to the green and lush rainforests.
Eckerö Line and Eckerö Linjen 2017 full year statistics
Eckerö Line, a subsidiary of Åland-based Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö and operator of the 2,080-passenger, 1,796-lanemetre FINLANDIA between Helsinki and Tallinn, has released the 2017 statistics for the route. Eckerö Linjen, also a subsidiary of Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö servicing the Eckerö–Grisslehamn route with the 1,500-passenger and 515-lanemetre ECKERÖ released theirs as well.
TT-Line (Tasmania) signs an LoI with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft
According to sources in Australia, TT-Line Company Pty Ltd (TT-Line Tasmania) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the design and construction of two large ro-pax ferries that will replace SPIRIT OF TASMANIA I and II.
Record freight throughput for Europe’s busiest ferry port
Freight volumes through the Port of Dover have reached record levels for the fifth consecutive year.
The Kentish port handled 2,601,162 lorries in 2017 – up on the previous record by almost 10,000 units (2,591,286). It brings the total increase over the last five (record) years to just under 650,000 units or 33%.
Red Funnel’s CEO Kevin George appointed chairman of the Group
Following the restructuring of Isle of Wight ferry company Red Funnel in July last year, with a consortium of UK and Canadian pension funds having taken over, the current CEO, Kevin George, is stepping up as chairman of the Group. Six new non-executive members also join the Red Funnel board.
Færgen saw growth on all routes in 2017
The Danish ferry company Færgen has reported a successful 2017, showing growth on all their seven routes, hitting record levels on three of them.
Fjord1 wins contract to operate four Norwegian ferry connections
The municipality of Møre and Romsdal, Norway, has announced on its website that the ferry company Fjord1 has won the contract to operate four of its ferry connections.
Linda Line to bring in a new vessel to continue their operation
After having recently sold off their last ferry to Greek Golden Star Ferries, the 353-seat passenger-only high-speed catamaran KAROLIN, Linda Line has now reportedly entered into a preliminary oral agreement to bring in a not-yet known car carrying catamaran on the Helsinki to Tallinn route.
Belfast refit for new AZAMARA PURSUIT
Azamara Club Cruises has announced that its latest acquisition – the AZAMARA PURSUIT which is currently still sailing for P&O Cruises as ADONIA – will be refitted in the UK as it prepares to go into drydock at the iconic Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast.

UPDATED: Port of Madeira reducing port fees to make Funchal-Portimão ro-pax service viable
UPDATE 2:
The 13 companies that initially submitted their interest have all withdrawn from the tender process stating that they would not be able to make the service financially viable.
Madeira’s regional government has instead approved for a summer-only tender to be launched with a EUR 3m subsidy.
Cairnryan-Larne freight traffic grew by 1.3% in 2017
P&O Ferries carried 210,533 lorries on the two-ship Cairnryan-Larne route in 2017. This represents a 1.3% increase on 2016 and is the highest volume of freight traffic on the route since 2011.

The 1965-built former BC Ferries vessel QUEEN OF BURNABY was sold at auction last Thursday, 4 January, for CAD 653,356 after taxes and fees, following 281 bids.
All passengers and crew safely evacuated after MESTRE SIMÃO grounded in the Azores
In the morning of 6 January, the 748gt ro-pax ferry MESTRE SIMÃO of Atlânticoline was pushed onto rocks by strong winds and waves when approaching Madelena on the Isle of Pico.

The REGINA BALTICA has completed repairs in Gibraltar and has returned to Valencia to resume sailing on the Valencia-Mostaganem (Algeria) service.
30-metre section of PETER PAN on its way to Bremerhaven
As earlier reported, TT-Line’s PETER PAN arrived at German Dry Docks (GDD) in Bremerhaven on 22 December for her 30-metre lengthening.
Boreal orders fully electric ferry at Vard
Boreal has ordered a new 74m, 199-passenger fully electric ferry to be introduced on the Norwegian domestic service between Kvanndal and Utne.
