Scandlines selects suppliers for electrification of Fehmarn Belt ferries

Scandlines reached another milestone on the road to electrification of the Puttgarden-Rødby ferries when they signed a contract with Wärtsilä to supply the electrical systems that will ensure that electricity contributes about 80 per cent of the energy needed for a crossing. Another contract has been signed with Echandia for the delivery of the battery systems, which are designed to meet a 10-year lifespan.

NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group announce plans for first ‘green shipping corridor’ between UK and Ireland to dramatically cut emissions

NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group announced plans to establish the first “green shipping corridors” between Ireland and the UK. The proposed project would see NatPower Marine develop the UK’s first commercial electric ship charging network to support electric propulsion and cold ironing, as part of a global network.
The network – which would require an estimated GBP 100m investment from NatPower Marine – would see this dedicated e-ship charging infrastructure delivered across all eight UK and Irish ports operated by Peel Ports Group. The master plan would also include electric car, van and HGV chargers installed for commercial electric vehicles passing through the ports.

Gotlandsbolaget's operations are largely seasonal and the first quarter of 2024 means, as expected, a negative adjusted operating profit. The result is positively affected by stabilized fuel prices and an early Easter, but negatively by costs for the establishment of the new cruise venture with BIRKA GOTLAND. Revenues amounted to SEK 384.9 million (362.9), and costs amounted to SEK -419.6 million (-425.8).

First vessel in new fleet of next generation Parramatta River ferries enters service

The NSW Government has announced the first of seven new Parramatta Class ferries, which have been designed by Incat Crowther, is now in service in Sydney. These new ferries will service the busy Parramatta River commuter route, and are being constructed in Tasmania, Australia by Richardson Devine Marine.

WMS introduces solutions to modernize ocean-going ferry connectivity

WMS is expanding its cellular and Wi-Fi services to ocean-going ferries. The WMS offering includes an Wi-Fi portal, network design, installation, management, and monitoring. This solution will require little onboard infrastructure yet deliver a robust Wi-Fi and cellular service. These services, which WMS demonstrated at the Shippax Ferry Conference, showcased the company’s networks, its engineering expertise, services from more than 350 global roaming partners, the Wi-Fi solution, and customer support.

Sea Lines signs an agreement with DP World to operate at the new Constanta ro-ro terminal

Black Sea ferry operator Sea Lines has signed an agreement with DP World, the world’s third-largest port operator. This partnership will see Sea Lines launch operations from Romania's Constanta Port to Turkey's strategic Karasu Port. The Åland Island-based ferry company plans to run a daily passenger and freight service along this route, establishing a crucial trade corridor that links Turkey with Central Europe.

This year, Sea Lines is making a multi-million-euro investment in the Constanta-Karasu route with two ferries, which will accommodate both passengers and freight. The first of these vessels, the former URD of Stena, is set to embark on its maiden journey in July 2024, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and trade between Romania and Turkey.

Astilleros Armon shipyard delivered the first of 12 new hybrid fast ferries for Liberty Lines

The first of 12 new hybrid monohull fast ferries for Italian operator Liberty Lines has been delivered by shipbuilder Astilleros Armon in Spain. The 39.5-metre VITTORIO MORACE is capable of transporting 251 passengers at speeds of 30 knots and can also operate in a fully electric mode at speeds of up to 10 knots.

The vessels will be delivered between 2024 and 2029. Next up being CRISTINA M.

Silversea has taken delivery of SILVER RAY from Meyer Werft, the second ship in its Nova Class. SILVER RAY joins her sister ship, SILVER NOVA, as one of the most energy efficient ultra-luxury and expedition cruise ships ever built.

Silversea’s Nova Class marks a new take on luxury at sea, introducing an unparalleled openness to the world with an asymmetrical design and 4,000m2 of exterior glass. Due to embark on her maiden voyage from Lisbon on 15 June, SILVER RAY will spend her inaugural season in the Mediterranean before crossing the Atlantic to the Americas in December 2024.

KONGSBERG and Torghatten to develop self-driving ferry service linking Trondheim and the Fosen peninsula

The strategic collaboration will see Kongsberg Maritime (KONGSBERG) technologies installed on the 2018-built sister ferries LAGATUN and MUNKEN, including auto docking, auto crossing, collision avoidance and situational awareness capabilities.

The car ferry service operation is part of the Norwegian highway network – County Road 715 - and connects the city of Trondheim with communities on the Fosen peninsula.
