Fjord Line expands its services by launching new departures

Fjord Line launches a new evening departure on the Hirtshals-Kristiansand route. In addition, Fjord Line strengthens its services by offering a domestic nightly route between Kristiansand, Stavanger, and Bergen. With these upgrades, Fjord Line will offer a year-round evening departure between Hirtshals and Kristiansand, the shortest route between Denmark and Norway.

Fjord Line’s ferries, STAVANGERFJORD and BERGENSFJORD, will sail the additional evening departure between Hirtshals and Kristiansand. From Kristiansand, the ships will sail to Stavanger on the new domestic night route. From Stavanger, the journey continues to Bergen.

Ekeri transports its cargo emissions neutrally with Wasaline

Trailer manufacturer Ekeri and Wasaline have deepened their cooperation. Since the beginning of this year, Ekeri has purchased an additional service called "Green Transport" from Wasaline, which means minimal CO2 emissions on all their transports on Wasaline.

Wasaline allocates battery operation for all Ekeri's transports across Kvarken. AURORA BOTNIA uses 2.3 MWh batteries, which corresponds to about 5% of the total energy for a crossing. Thus, Wasaline can allocate a certain number of units that are transported over with the energy obtained from the batteries.

Toyota’s growth fund Invests in Corvus Energy

Corvus Energy announced that they have secured an investment from Woven Capital, Toyota’s growth fund, to accelerate the development of its growing product portfolio in battery storage and hydrogen fuel cells, and to support expansion into new geographies. Woven Capital invests alongside strategic investors including BW Group, Equinor Ventures, Hydro and Shell Ventures.

Interferry to host joint Africa Ferry Safety seminar with IMO

Global trade association Interferry has partnered with the IMO to organise and co-host a seminar on ferry safety in Africa. Taking place on 16-17 April 2024 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the seminar furthers Interferry´s commitment to reducing casualties in developing nations by promoting the highest maritime safety standards.

SunStone Maritime Group announced the reactivation of two Infinity Class Expedition vessels with multi-year charters signed for the OCEAN EXPLORER and the OCEAN ODYSSEY. The OCEAN EXPLORER will return to polar cruising in October 2024, when Quark Expeditions, a long-term client of SunStone, adds the vessel to its fleet of expedition vessels. The OCEAN ODYSSEY will operate outside the cruise market.

Incat Crowther to design new passenger ferry for US operator Yankee Freedom

Incat Crowther has been commissioned by US shipbuilder Gladding Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation to design a new 300-passenger, high-speed catamaran for US operator Yankee Freedom. The new vessel, YANKEE FREEDOM IV, will replace the 250-passenger YANKEE FREEDOM III, which was also designed by Incat Crowther.

Like its predecessor, YANKEE FREEDOM IV will provide service on the route between Key West in Florida and the Dry Tortugas National Park.

‘Duck Tail’ installation on PONT-AVEN is expected to improve fuel economy by 10%

A ‘duck tail’ has been added to Brittany Ferries’ flagship vessel, PONT-AVEN, as part of her annual technical stop. The work has increased the ship’s length by around three metres, improving hydrodynamic performance, resulting in improved fuel economy by around 10 per cent when PONT-AVEN returns to service.

Brittany Ferries has also turned to its drive-train partner, Wärtsilä, to boost efficiency further, the partners are investigating improved propeller designs. This could lead to a further improvement of around 5% of propulsion efficiency when retro-fitted to PONT-AVEN at a later date.

Austal to build Incat Crowther designed catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries

Austal Australasia has been awarded a contract to construct a 32-metre catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries, based in Hillarys, Western Australia. Collaborating with vessel designer Incat Crowther, Austal will commence construction of the aluminium catamaran at the company’s Philippines shipyard in the first quarter of 2024.

The 32-metre aluminium catamaran will have a capacity for up to 400 passengers and five crew seated over three decks, and extensive cargo space available for passenger’s bicycles and baggage securely stored on two decks. With 2 x 1,029kW MAN D2862 diesel engines driving fixed pitch propellers, the vessel will have an operating speed of up to 25 knots on the 45 minute journey from Hillarys Boat Harbour to Rottnest Island.

Japan’s Seikan Ferry has taken delivery of the new HAYABUSA III from Hakodate Dock, which will replace the 2000-built HAYABUSA 3 on the Aomori-Hakodate route. HAYABUSA 3, meanwhile has been sold to Greece’s Saronic Ferries. 

The new HAYABUSA III is 14m longer than the old HAYABUSA 3 and can take 300 passengers compared to 105.

Before taking service for Saronic Ferries, the old HAYABUSA 3 will have its passenger areas expanded in Perama.

Stena Line records a record number of Danish ski travelers to Sweden in 2024

Danish ski travelers are flocking to Swedish ski resorts like never before, something that can be confirmed by both Stena Line and SkiStar, the leading player in ski tourism in Scandinavia. Already during the first half of January, Stena Line has reported an increase in the number of ski travelers by 11 percent. Together with the 61 percent increase at the end of 2023 for this year's ski holidays, Stena Line is now confident that 2024 will be a record year.

The MOBY DADA and MOBY ZAZA have both been chartered out. MOBY DADA will serve for Algerie Ferries between Alger and Alicante. The vessel has been repainted in Algerie Ferries colours, indicating a longer charter. MOBY ZAZA, on the other hand, is on a short-term charter to Jadrolinija for the company’s route between Split and Ancona.

Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore (BV Solutions M&O) has developed and now delivered a ‘Fleet Energy and Emissions Forecast‘ tool to Brittany Ferries.

Brittany Ferries approached Bureau Veritas Solutions (BVS, looking for support in forecasting performance, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions across their fleet. Brittany Ferries wanted each department to be able to meet CII and EU ETS requirements and, in the longer term, to map out the most efficient vessel utilisation, capacity planning, route planning, retrofit scheduling, timetabling and voyage management fleet-wide.
