Baleària celebrates 25 years in 2023 and announced that they have transported 55 million passengers, 13 million vehicles and 80 million lanemetres of cargo since the start.
GOTLAND HORIZON Series - hydrogen-powered ships for future Gotland traffic
GOTLAND HYDROCAT and GOTLAND HORIZON may become Sweden's first large-scale hydrogen-powered ships for both passengers and freight. Rederi AB Gotland has the ambition of being able to order a ship as early as 2025, to go into Destination Gotland's traffic by 2030.
The project is developed by Rederi AB Gotland, Destination Gotland and Gotland Tech Development.

Finnlines’ passenger figures increasing – the number of individual passengers on a record level

In 2022, the number of passengers on Finnlines’ vessels increased after two quiet years of covid pandemic. The number of passengers on Finnlines’ routes totalled 648,000 in 2022, an increase of 13 per cent compared with the previous year.
Ferguson Marine announce appointments to its senior leadership team
Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) (FMPG) has announced the appointment of a technical director and chief financial officer to its senior leadership team. Eddie Purves joins as technical director, with 30 years’ experience in commercial & naval shipbuilding in Scotland, while Carla Roberts joins as chief financial officer, having recently served as financial director within Water Retail.
BC Ferries appoints President and CEO
The British Columbia Ferry Services Board announced the appointment of Nicolas Jimenez as President and Chief Executive Officer of BC Ferries, effective 6 March 2023. Mr. Jimenez, who is currently the President and CEO of the Insurance Corporation of B.C., was selected following an international executive search. Interim CEO Jill Sharland, who stepped into the role in will return to her previous executive position as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at BC Ferries.
Rolls-Royce successfully tests mtu engines with pure hydrogen
Rolls-Royce announced that it has conducted successful tests of a 12-cylinder gas variant of the mtu Series 4000 L64 engine running on 100% hydrogen fuel. The tests, carried out by the Power Systems business unit, showed very good characteristics in terms of efficiency, performance, emissions and combustion.

Viking Line's ROSELLA was handed over 17 January to Aegean Sea Lines Maritime Company.
The name of the vessel will be ANEMOS after reflagging.
LMG Marin appointed for CMAL’s Mallaig-Lochboisdale new vessel project

Naval architecture consultant LMG Marin has been appointed to support the design development for the replacement vessel for CalMac’s 1989-built LORD OF THE ISLES. The new vessel will increase resilience on the Mallaig-Lochboisdale route.
LMG Marin will work with Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) to investigate and evaluate the feasibility of designing a lower emission ferry to be in line with the Scottish Government climate change commitments.
Bornholmslinjen’s EXPRESS 5 hopefully to be delivered at the end of February

Construction of EXPRESS 5 at Austal in the Philippines is approaching completion. The high-speed craft is delayed and the latest projected delivery date is now at the end of February after technicians from Molslinjen just visited the yard.
The EXPRESS 5 will then be sailed home to Rønne, where it will be inspected and approved by the authorities before it can be put into operation.
Grimaldi orders a further 5+2 ammonia-ready 9,000 CEU capacity PCTC's in China

Grimaldi Group has upped the anti of its PCTC fleet expansion programme at Chinese shipyards by ordering a further five ammonia-ready 9,000 CEU capacity vessels. The new order, which includes an option on a further two vessels, has been placed with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company Limited (SWS) and China Shipbuilding Trading Company Limited (CSTC), two subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).
Wind-powered ORCELLE WIND secures EUR 9 million in EU funding

Wallenius Wilhelmsen and project partners have secured a Horizon Europe funding totalling EUR 9 million to support building a ro-ro sailing vessel. Over the next five years, all aspects of planning, building, and operating a wind-powered vessel, the ORCELLE WIND, will be done.
ORCELLE WIND is a wind-powered PCTC that will be 220 meters and have a capacity for over 7,000 cars, but will also be capable of carrying breakbulk and rolling equipment.
Incat poised to deliver the world’s largest, zero emissions, lightweight ferry

Amongst vessels under construction at the Incat shipyard is a 130-metre lightweight ferry, originally intended to be powered by LNG, that will carry 2,100 passengers and 226 vehicles for Incat’s long term South American customer, Buquebús. Following close consultation with the customer, Incat was recently asked to investigate the possibility of replacing the LNG powerplant with a battery-electric solution.
Whilst there are challenges to overcome, the ship which is to be delivered in 2025, when battery electric, would be the world’s largest, lightweight, zero emissions ferry operating on any route in the world.

A fire broke out on GNV's LA SUPERBA in the port of Palermo, Italy, in the night of 14 January 14 2023.
The fire started at the cargo deck. All passengers and crew were evacuated. The fire was extinguished a few hours later.
Havila Kystruten to only accept fossil fuel vehicles on board

After a risk analysis carried out by Proactima AS, Havila Kystruten has decided that only cars and motor vehicles that use fossil fuel can be transported on board the company's ships, in selected ports along the coastal route. This means that electric, hybrid and hydrogen cars cannot be transported on board.
Molslinjen's purchase of ForSea approved

The Danish and Swedish competition authorities have now approved Molslinjen's announced purchase of ForSea. The next step is the so-called closing, where the trade is executed.
VIKING GRACE celebrates 10 years of service

The popular vessel VIKING GRACE, which has served more than 10 million passengers, celebrates 10 years of service on 13 January. GRACE, built at the Perno shipyard in Turku, was one of the world’s first passenger ships to use liquefied natural gas as fuel.
Keel-laying and steel-cutting ceremonies for first two CalMac Islay ferries
The construction of two new CalMac Islay ferries at Cemre shipyard reached key construction milestones this week with the first unit having its keel laid, while the second started its construction with a steel-cut ceremony, three weeks earlier than planned.
Designed by Flensburg-based naValue GmbH, the new, 94.8-metre ferries will each have capacity for up to 450 passengers and 107 cars or 14 commercial vehicles, providing a combined 40% increase in vehicle and freight capacity on the Islay routes and improving the overall resilience of the wider fleet.
