Brittany Ferries cancels contract for HONFLEUR

Brittany Ferries has cancelled the EUR 200 million contract with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) for the design and construction of the 42,200gt HONFLEUR. The dual fuel ro-pax ferry was ordered in June 2017 with delivery scheduled for June 2019.
FRS returns the VOLCAN DE TAUCE, Baleària increases sailings

The VOLCAN DE TAUCE was the vessel chartered by Naviera Armas to FRS, to allow FRS to operate a service between Motril and Melilla, a route that Naviera Armas had to vacate as part of the agreement when acquiring Trasmediterránea.
CLdN further strengthens its MoS network

CLdN has confirmed a further expansion of its North Sea MoS network with a second Esbjerg call from Zeebrugge. The Zeebrugge hub will also become an integrated part of CLdN’s existing Leixões-Rotterdam service with twice weekly calls in the Belgian port.
Eckerö Linjen to restart traffic between Sweden and Åland

Eckerö Linjen’s ro-pax ferry ECKERÖ is about to restart service between Eckerö and Grisslehamn on Friday 26 June, after more than three months of layup due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spanish post-COVID-19 service resumption

Trasmediterránea has announced that the CIUDAD AUTONOMA MELILLA will recommence sailings between Málaga and Melilla on Thursday 18 June. The schedule offers six sailings a week, Sunday through Friday, departing Málaga at 15:00, and the return from Melilla at 23:59.
Viking Line first in the world with DNV GL’s My Care verification, adds new summer routes

Viking Line is the first shipping company in the world to comply with DNV GL’s My Care methodology having its infection protection work and all COVID-19 routines verified by the said classification society. The My Care quality assurance system covers all seven Viking Line vessels and the six terminals in Sweden, Åland, Finland and Estonia.

Tallink to launch another temporary route, connecting Tallinn with Turku

Tallink Grupp has announced that from 6 July until 24 July its ro-pax cruise ferry BALTIC QUEEN will operate two weekly roundtrips between Tallinn and Turku.

The 75,166gt COSTA VICTORIA has found new owners with its buyers being the Genova Industrie Navali-controlled San Giorgio del Porto (SGdP) shipyard. Besides being specialised in shiprepair, conversion and newbuilding projects, Genova Industrie Navali is also active in ship dismantling and recycling.

STENA ESTRID returns to service after main engine repairs

Stena Line’s first E-Flexer, STENA ESTRID, returned to service on the Irish Sea on 15 June after spending six weeks undergoing repairs to one of her two main engines alongside in the Scottish ferry port of Cairnryan.
Fjord Line’s OSLOFJORD on Langesund-Hirtshals

Instead of restarting the ‘shopping route’ between Sandefjord and Strömstad as of tomorrow, 16 June, Fjord Line’s OSLOFJORD will operate between Langesund and Hirtshals as of 18 June.

Carnival Corporation reports its Q2 results
Carnival Corporation & plc released its Q2 results, showing the full effect of the COVID-19 lockdown. Revenue decreased to USD 0.7 billion, compared to USD 4.8 billion in 2019. U.S. GAAP net income ended with a loss of USD -4.4 billion, compared to USD 451 million last year.

Wärtsilä to design and equip two zero-emissions battery powered ferries
The technology group Wärtsilä’s experience and leading position in the development of battery and hybrid propulsion vessel solutions has been recognised with the award of a contract to design and equip two new zero-emissions ferries. The ships are to be built for Norwegian operator Boreal Sjö at Holland Shipyards in the Netherlands. The orders with Wärtsilä for the design and the equipment were placed in April 2020.
No Fuel, No Fumes: Water Witch fights ocean plastic pollution with electric clean-up boats
Water Witch has been building specialised clean-up boats for over 50 years, with some 200 debris and trash retrieval workboats deployed in harbours and waterways around the world. More than just an eyesore, it’s estimated that 300 million tons of plastic have entered the water since the 1940s, harming marine life and damaging ecosystems on which humans rely. Harbours are often the last opportunity to intercept plastic before it enters the ocean, where it is much more difficult to remove.

Cruises between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden are open again
Cruises and hotel packages can be booked again at Wasaline. Day cruisers can stay on board the ferry during port time if they do not want to go ashore. Unfortunately, Swedish tourists still must wait to get over to Finland until the restrictions are over.
Tim Meyer to step in as a CEO at Meyer Turku Shipyard. Jan Meyer to take over in Papenburg, Germany
Jan Meyer, the CEO of Meyer Turku since 2014, will focus in the future on the role as Managing Director of Meyer Werft, Germany. At the same time Tim Meyer, managing director of Meyer Werft since 2016, will take over the position of the CEO at Meyer Turku. The change will take effect after the summer 2020.
A new solar park being built at the Port of Trelleborg
Port of Trelleborg continues with its investments according to plan. Right now a solar park of 3,000 square meter is being built in the new part of the port, consisting of 1,728 solar panels. Port of Trelleborg is the Baltic Sea’s climate-smartest port and we are constantly working on various improvement measures within environment and sustainability. The introduction of a solar park is part of our climate work where we see an opportunity to become an electricity supply ourselves.
Tallink offers unique one-off sailing on Helsinki-Saaremaa-Helsinki route on 27-29 July 2020
Tallink Grupp has announced that it is giving travellers the unique opportunity to sail directly to Saaremaa from Helsinki this summer with one special return voyage to the island on the Helsinki-Saaremaa-Helsinki route on 27-29 July 2020.
From sun-drenched Greece, ferrying tourists and commuters on a 15 minutes voyage to distributing fish feed in winter and stormy Punta Arenas, how much further apart can you go? Well, to be exact: 8,501 nautical miles in 54 days. Although this included eight days waiting for weather in the middle of Northern winter at Cagliari and nine days waiting for a suitable weather window in the Southern autumn to pass along the Argentinian coast to Magellan strait.
PEAB expands Port of Trelleborg
Peab has been commissioned to build ferry berths no. 11 and 12 including ramps as well as a side ramp to existing ferry berth no. 10 in Port of Trelleborg. Construction will start in June 2020 and the project is expected to be finished at year-end 2021/2022.
Deltamarin wins design contract for Finnlines Superstar ro-pax project
Deltamarin has signed a contract with China Merchants Jinling shipyard (Weihai), previously known as AVIC Weihai, for the approval and detail design of Finnlines' Superstar 5,100-lanemetre ro-pax vessel project.
Wärtsilä comes onboard the Mayflower Autonomous Ship Project
Retracing the voyage of its famous 17th century namesake vessel, the Mayflower Autonomous ship is set to become one of the world’s first fully autonomous, unmanned vessels to cross the Atlantic. Led by marine research organisation, ProMare, the project is developing autonomous systems that can later be deployed commercially, offering a window into the future of shipping and marine research.
After having announced their three month biofuel trial, leading short sea shipowner UECC and the GoodShipping Program have now partnered with premium car manufacturer BMW Group to continue to test marine Bio Fuel Oil (BFO) on UECC’s ‘roll on, roll off’ (ro-ro) car carrying vessels. BMW Group joins UECC and the GoodShipping Program in the previously announced trial, where BFO is being tested on UECC’s 140m, 2,080-vehicle carrier AUTOSKY.
Trelleborg-Sassnitz: Stena Line completes plans for route closure
On April 8 Stena Line announced plans to permanently close the ferry route between Trelleborg and Sassnitz. The company and the German works council have now agreed and the route will be closed permanently. In total the closure and the reorganisation of the company will affect 130 German working positions.
