Today, 27 November, Brittany Ferries has virtually inaugurated the newest addition to its fleet, the E-Flexer Class GALICIA. Specifically adapted for Brittany Ferries’ UK-Spain services, GALICIA will make her first commercial sailing on 2 December, providing two weekly return crossings between Portsmouth and Santander and one weekly return crossing between Cherbourg and Portsmouth.

Coinciding with the news of DFDS adding a new direct six times weekly Dunkerque-Rosslare service, CLdN announced that it would double the frequency of its Zeebrugge-Cork route.

DFDS hasn’t awaited the outcome of the Brexit negotiations to announce the start of a new six times weekly service linking its existing Dunkerque hub in France with Rosslare in Ireland. “Whether or not there will be a trading agreement between the EU and the UK, this new route is there to stay,” a DFDS spokesperson told Shippax.

Following the termination of her one-year charter to Brittany Ferries earlier this month, Stena RoRo’s KERRY has been time-chartered by DFDS to supplement the Apuania Class VICTORIA SEAWAYS and REGINA SEAWAYS on the Klaipeda-Kiel route, increasing the number of sailings in each direction from seven to nine per week.

DFDS and the Joint Movement and Transport Organisation (JMTO), which provides strategic transport for Danish military missions, have entered into a new six-year agreement, replacing an earlier agreement.

Attica Group’s Q3 financial results affected by pandemic

Consolidated revenue in Q3 for Attica Group was EUR 114 million (EUR 163 million), and EUR 231 million (EUR 327 million) for the 1 January-30 September 2020 period. EBITDA for Q3 ended at EUR 37 million (EUR 57 million), while EBITDA for the 1 January-30 September 2020 period ended at EUR 39 million (EUR 73 million).

Irish Continental Group’s revenue and passenger carryings impacted by COVID-19

Irish Continental Group (ICG) has released its YTD (21 November) trading update and financial results for the first ten months of 2020, i.e. 1 January to 31 October. Consolidated group revenue fell by 26% compared to the same period last year, ending at EUR 229 million (unaudited).

Fjord1 grew its business during Q3

The new service contracts that started on 1 January 2020 have resulted in an improvement of Fjord1’s business. Revenues for Q3 were NOK 789 million (+12%) and EBITDA NOK 338 million (+21%).

The Port of Ystad in the south of Sweden has been expanded with new ferry berths to be able to receive more traffic and larger ships. On Wednesday, November 25, the first tests were conducted in the new port to secure that the new ferry berths work as planned. From the turn of the year, the new ferry berths will be used regularly.

The technology group Wärtsilä has been selected to supply the engines and related emissions control after-treatment systems for two new passenger ferries being built for operation between Switzerland and France across Lake Geneva. The ferries are being built at the Shiptec AG yard in Switzerland for General Navigation Company (CGN), a Swiss ferry operator based in Lausanne. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in September 2020.

SAGA moves a step closer to sailing with award of new COVID safety accreditation

Saga has become the first cruise operator to be awarded new COVID-19 health assurance accreditation by Lloyd’s Register, the maritime safety experts. The move is a crucial step ahead of the planned return of cruise operations in spring next year in a COVID-secure environment.

The Finnish project development company Flexens Oy Ab will finish a feasibility study of the Power2AX project in November 2020. The project aims at implementing green hydrogen production and use in fuel ferries in the Åland archipelago. The Power2AX contributes to the Smart Energy Åland project in which Flexens is demonstrating 100 % renewable energy system in the Åland Islands. Flexens is steering the project together with the Government of Åland and has employed two Finnish engineering and consulting offices, Deltamarin and Elomatic, with the feasibility study. The assessment provides the first estimate for technical and economic feasibility of the concept covering hydrogen production at a wind farm and using the hydrogen in fuel cell ferries in the Åland archipelago.

EGR Offered for Dual-Fuel ME-GA Engine

MAN Energy Solutions has announced that it is to offer its proprietary EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system as an emissions solution for its new, low-speed ME-GA engine, the Otto-cycle variant of its established ME-GI dual-fuel engine. EGR is a NOx-emissions-reduction technique that ensures IMO Tier III-compliance in both diesel and gas mode.

Global trade association Interferry is conducting a major energy efficiency data survey among members to ensure that existing ferries can comply with short-term greenhouse gas emissions measures agreed in principle at last week’s meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee.

For years Telenor Maritime has provided secure connectivity to cruise, ferry and offshore industries. Soon, their vision for global connectivity at sea may be completed with the acquisition of KNL Networks.
Due to technological and topographic challenges, a full-fledged offer to the merchant fleet sector has been challenging to deliver, until now. On 20th of November Telenor Maritime reached an agreement to acquire 100 % of the shares in KNL Networks, a Finnish tech company, which has developed a unique system providing data access through a secure mesh network around the globe for maritime and critical communication markets. With this technology and Telenor Maritime’s expertise, the merchant fleet’s missing link is finally in place: a dedicated end-to-end channel for reliable, secure, and above all affordable access to business-critical information.

IMO MEPC75: Higher ambitions for reducing GHG emissions from shipping are needed to deliver on green deal ambitions in the maritime sector and in ports

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC75) gave preliminary approval to the compromise agreement for the package of technical and operational measures to address greenhouse gas emissions from ships in the short run. The agreed package combines the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ships Index (EEXI), the Carbon Intensity Indicators (CII) operational measure, the Carbon Intensity rating mechanism, as well as the strengthening of the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) framework.
