Photo above: Cantiere Navale Visentini is building the second and last SRtP-exempted modified version of its standard ro-pax class. A sister ship to CIUDAD DE VALENCIA, the yet unnamed vessel has a length of 203.28m and 25.6m beam, with an increased intake of 2,566 freight lanemetres on three fully-enclosed freight decks as well as 255 cars stowed on the fixed car deck in the lower hold and the open upper deck. TT-Line’s first next-generation ro-pax floated out

TT-Line’s first ‘green’ ro-pax under construction at Nanjing Jinling Shipyard’s Yizheng facility was floated out on 10 November. Slated for delivery in 2022, the LNG-powered ro-pax represents the first such project for the Chinese yard which is also behind Grimaldi Group’s GG5G Class and DFDS’s 6,695-lanemetre ro-ro series.

Viking Line expands range of destinations for special cruises in 2021

For the first time in its history Viking Line will operate cruises to Poland, Bornholm and Höga Kusten next summer. Visby, which became popular as a ‘nearby destination’ for the Swedish market last summer, is featured in the timetable once again.
Tallink Silja recalls earlier announced job cuts

The earlier announced potential 500 job cuts at Tallink Silja AB, the Swedish subsidiary of Tallink Grupp AS, will not materialize due to an extension of the Swedish short-term layoff until the summer of 2021.

New and more realistic chance for Brunsbüttel-Cuxhaven ferry in 2021?

The Turkish ro-ro operator Cenk has purchased Grimaldi Lines’ freight-oriented ro-pax EUROFERRY MALTA.
Suardiaz expands with Barcelona-Tangier Med link

The Spanish family-owned shipping company Suardiaz, the longest established ro-ro operator in Spain, has started a new twice weekly service between Barcelona and Tangier Med, using the 1,625-lanemetre PAULINE RUSS.

Norse Shipbuilding launches world’s first H2 ferry

On 6 November, Turkish Norse Shipbuilding launched the 299-passenger and 80-car capacity HYDRA, the world’s first liquid hydrogen (H2)-powered ferry.
Corsica extends public service contract for two months – new 22-month contract planned

Following the cancellation of the seven-year public service contract on 25 September, Corsica was left with very few options to retain the so-called territorial continuity as from 1 January 2021.

DFDS’ Q3 interim report: healthy freight carryings but significant drop in passengers lowered profit
DFDS has released its Q3 interim report, showing a 20% drop in revenue compared to the same quarter last year, ending at DKK 900 million. EBITDA before special items decreased with 29% to DKK 846 million.
Pandemic affects Finnlines' Q3 and YTD results
The COVID-19 pandemic saw Finnlines’ Q3 revenues dwindle by 18% from EUR 155.3 million in July-September 2019 to EUR 126.7 million in the same period this year. Year-to-date (January-September) revenues have decreased by 20% from EUR 450.8 million in 2019 to EUR 363.1 million in 2020.
Revenues at euro 3,534 million (euro 4,217 million at September 30, 2019),down by 16.2%. EBITDA, at euro 200 million, impacted by the downturn in production volumes of the Group’s Italian sites (euro 306 million at September 30, 2019) with an EBITDA margin of 5.7%, up from 5.0% of the first half of the year (7.3% at September 30, 2019)
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. together with NCL Corporation Ltd.reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2020 and provided a business update. Revenue decreased to $6.5 million compared to $1.9 billion in 2019 due to the complete suspension of voyages in the quarter. GAAP net income (loss) was $(677.4) million or EPS of $(2.50) compared to $450.6 million or $2.09 in the prior year.

Viking Cruises announced an additional investment by its existing minority shareholders, TPG Capital and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), in Viking Holdings Ltd, the parent company of Viking Cruises.
Weather Dependent Lashing now accepted by the IMO
Over the past 10 or more years the discussion about Weather Dependent Lashing has continued in National and International forums, including the IMO. Unfortunately no consensus was ever reached about a so-called Unified Interpretation of the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Securing (*1- The CSS Code). Until yesterday, when the IMO Maritime Safety Committee completed its 102th session. An Amendment to the CSS Code was drafted by an International Workgroup under the umbrella of the IMO MSC and covered amongst others the principles of Weather Dependent Lashing. This Amendment has been accepted by the IMO MSC and will be distributed to the member states as Circular MSC.102/CIRC 1624 with the request for implementation.
Stena Line charts 25 years of success in Belfast
Stena Line is celebrating the 25th anniversary (12 Nov 2020) of the relocation of its ferry services to Belfast from Larne in 1995. During this time, the Irish Sea’s leading ferry company has achieved a number of key milestones including transporting in excess of 33 million passengers, 7 million cars and almost 7 million freight units.
Forsea Ferries opens the door to new application for Thordon bearings
Thordon Bearings is to retrofit its grease-free ThorPlas-Blue bearings to ForSea Ferries’ TYCHO BRAHE, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly ships, at its next scheduled drydocking.
The decision follows the success of the bearing installation to the bow doors of AURORA, the first of two high-intensity battery-operated ferries converted by Sweden’s Oresund Drydocks (ODD) and delivered in 2016.

DFDS adds rail connection between Nuremberg and Trieste
DFDS is further strengthening its supply chain services with a new rail connection between Nuremberg and Trieste. In combination with DFDS’ ferry and logistics activities, the Danish company can now offer an even wider transport infrastructure between Turkey and Europe. The new connection is operated in cooperation with Çobantur Boltas.
YT-negotiations concerning permanent lay-offs at Meyer Turku shipyard are over
Meyer Turku has closed the YT-negotiations concerning permanent lay-offs and will permanently lay off 84 people from outfitting and design functions. The number includes nine blue-collar and 75 white-collar workers. Together with the lay-off numbers announced in August, Meyer Turku will lay off 250 people. Part of the reduction of the workforce is done through retirement and other personnel arrangements. The original estimation at the start of the YT negotiations in April was 450 people.
Tallink Grupp opens ticket sales for 2021 special summer cruises
9 November 2020, TALLINN - Tallink Grupp opened ticket sales for special summer cruises 2021 on company’s vessels VICTORIA I and SILJA EUROPA with departures from Helsinki and Tallinn. More special summer cruises for 2021 will be added gradually over the coming weeks and months and ticket sales will open step-by-step on the company’s websites.

Stena Line keep vital supply lines open between Denmark and Sweden
From November 9th, the Danish authorities will introduce restrictions in the Northern part of Jutland to reduce the spreading and development of COVID-19 virus. Stena Line has therefore decided to temporarily stop the passenger operation between Frederikshavn in Denmark and Gothenburg in Sweden between November 9th and December 3rd. The freight operation on the route will continue to keep the vital supply lines open between Denmark and Sweden.

Dry docks for the first Chinese cruise ship start in Shanghai

The beginning of hull erection works, as well as the coin ceremony of the first cruise ship that Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd (SWS), subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), is building for CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited, joint venture between Carnival Corporation and CSSC, took place today at the Shanghai shipyard. The joint venture will also be in charge of operating the unit.
