La Méridionale to start thrice weekly Marseille-Tangier ro-pax service

With two ro-pax ships surplus to requirements, La Méridionale has announced that it will start a direct service from Marseille to Tangier Med in late October, early November. The start of this new direct France-Morocco service is expected to coincide with the termination of the charter of the 800-passenger and 2,250-lanemetre capacity GIROLATA to GNV.

The Grimaldi Group has further expanded its fleet of PCTCs by taking delivery of GRANDE NEW JERSEY on 4 September. The 199.9m, 65,255gt vessel is the fourth of seven sister ships on order for Grimaldi at China’s Yangfan shipyard in Zhoushan.

Royal Caribbean International’s (RCI) fifth Oasis Class vessel, WONDER OF THE SEAS, has been floated out at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. The ship was initially slated for a mid-2021 delivery, but the COVID-19 situation has pushed this date back into 2022.

The lengthening and conversion of Stena Line’s Visentini Class, 2005-built ro-pax STENA LAGAN reached a major stage on 2 September when the first section of the vessel’s new 36m midbody section was lifted into place at the Sedef Shipbuilding yard in Tuzla, Turkey.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has handed over QUEEN JENUVIA to Seaworld Express Ferry. The 27,391gt ro-pax ferry is due to be introduced on the Mokpo-Jeju route on 29 September, replacing the 1996-built SANTA LUCINO which will reach the 25-year age limit next year.

The first of four new LNG hybrid coastal express ships building for Norway’s Havila Voyages at Tersan Shipyard in Yalova, HAVILA CAPELLA and HAVILA CASTOR, were put in the water on 4 September. Although the 640-passenger capacity vessels were originally scheduled to be delivered during Q4 this year, delays have pushed back their hand-over date until the first quarter of 2021.

Fred. Olsen’s fleet modernisation programme took a major step forward on 4 September when the first of two former Holland America Line (HAL) R Class vessels joined the rest of the Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines fleet currently laid up at Babcock Marine’s Rosyth facility on the Firth of Forth – the 1997-built BOREALIS, ex- ROTTERDAM.

To meet the 14-day COVID-19 quarantine, Italy has chartered the ro-pax ships RHAPSODY, SNAV ADRIATICO, GNV ALLEGRA, AURELIA and GNV AZZURRA to accommodate migrants arriving on the southern coasts of the country. This has created a temporary lack of ro-pax tonnage in the Italian domestic market.

Stena Line resumes passenger traffic to Latvia

Due to restrictions due to COVID-19, the ferry company Stena Line has since mid-March only been allowed to transport goods and passengers with a special permit on board the ferries between Sweden and Latvia. Estonia's first hybrid ship TOLL goes on its first voyage

Starting from September 2nd, passengers on Virtsu-Kuivastu ferry line between Muhu and mainland Estonia will be served by TS Laevad, a subsidiary company of Port of Tallinn, ferry TOLL which has been converted into the first hybrid passenger vessel in Estonia. Its batteries will allow from now on partial travel on electricity, which reduces the amount of diesel used and minimizes air pollution.
