Stena RoRo takes delivery of GALICIA, charters her out immediately to Brittany Ferries

Two weeks after a pre-delivery ceremony was held by the CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard, Stena RoRo officially took delivery of GALICIA, the third E-Flexer, in the early hours of 3 September.

DFDS starts separate Trieste-Patras service

While DFDS has been calling at Patras both north- and southbound on its Istanbul-Trieste service since 2018, the company will now operate a separate twice weekly service with a dedicated vessel, starting on 5 September.

Several companies of Lars Windhorst’s Tennor Holding have taken over 350 employees and the assets of the Flensburger Shipyard as part of a restructuring transfer with effect from 1 September 2020.

DFDS takes delivery of its fifth mega ro-ro

On 1 September, one day after the floating out of DFDS’s first next-generation ro-pax ferry at GSI, the Danish ro-ro and ferry giant took delivery of FLANDRIA SEAWAYS, the fifth and second last mega ro-ro in the 6,695-lanemetre or 449 13.6m-trailer capacity Jinling series.

Usuki Shipyard launches SUZUKAZE

Kokudo Kyushi Ferry’s SUZUKAZE was launched by Usuki Shipyard on 27 August. When completed early next year, SUZUKAZE will be introduced between Saganoseki, Kyushu and Misaki, Shikoku.

Further schedule changes for Brittany Ferries

Brittany Ferries is further adapting supply to demand. As from 7 September, the Visentini Class CONNEMARA, currently serving the Cherbourg-Portsmouth and Le-Havre Portsmouth routes, will be laid up. This means that these routes will be suspended until further notice.
Stena AB Q2 2020 interim financial report

Stena AB, with business operations ranging from ferry operations, offshore drilling, shipping, properties and recycling has released its Q2 2020 interim financial report, which was heavily affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Revenues from the ferry operations decreased from SEK 3,699 million in Q2 2019 to SEK 2,141 this Q2.
GSI floats out DFDS’s first Baltic Class ro-pax

DFDS’s first of two Baltic Class ro-pax ferries under construction at China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) was floated out from its building dock on 31 August.
CLdN further expands Iberia-Ireland network

Short-sea ro-ro specialist CLdN is adding another direct service to Ireland with a weekly Leixões-Dublin-Liverpool route, supplementing the existing Santander-Dublin-Liverpool route that was started in June.

Carnival Corporation's Costa Cruises Brand to Restart Cruise Operations This Weekend
Two cruise line brands from Carnival Corporation & plc have announced plans to resume sailing operations, with Italy-based Costa Cruises scheduled to restart sailing in Italy this Sunday, Sept. 6, followed by Germany-based AIDA Cruises scheduled to resume on Nov. 1.
RINA tests the potential of Digitalisation expansion
Over the last few months RINA has teamed up with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on a pilot project aimed at testing the extension of the data exchange capability of the ‘THETIS’ system.
Tallink Grupp has informed the company’s staff that it will this week notify the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Estonian Independent Maritime Workers Union of commencing further collective redundancies processes in the different group subsidiaries and respective consultations with the union.
Kongsberg Maritime and Massterly to equip and operate two zero-emission autonomous vessels for ASKO
Kongsberg Maritime and Massterly (a Kongsberg Wilhelmsen joint venture) have signed contracts with the leading Norwegian grocery distributor ASKO to equip two new vessels with autonomous technology, and to manage their operations at sea. With Norwegian companies delivering around 60% of the investment, this is a major milestone for the growth of sustainable maritime operations in Norway. The fully electric ships will replace 2 million kilometres of truck transport, saving 5,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
DFDS develops ambitious climate plan
DFDS want to become climate neutral by 2050 and are aiming for a relative reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by close to 45% from 2008 to 2030. That corresponds to an approximate reduction of 25-35% between 2019 and 2030. These are the main goals in DFDS’ new climate action plan.
American Cruise Lines New Modern Riverboat Passes Sea Trails
American Cruise Lines announced that AMERICAN JAZZ has passed Sea Trails with flying colors. Following the successful trials, American accepted delivery of the riverboat from Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, MD. The 190-passenger AMERICAN JAZZ is the latest in American’s acclaimed series of 5 new modern riverboats and will be added to the company’s fleet on the Mississippi River. American’s building plans have continued at full strength, despite this year’s pause in cruising, underscoring the Line’s confidence in domestic U.S. small ship cruising.
Seabourn, the ultra-luxury resort at sea, announced that it will cancel additional voyages for three cruise ships in its fleet as a part of its pause in global ship operations.
Irish Continental Group-Half-Yearly Financial Report
Following the unaudited financial trading update for the first six months of the year released 29 July, the full report has now been released.
Highlights:
• Revenues generated totalled EUR 130.8 million, EUR 36.0 million less than HY 2019.
• EBIT generated was a loss of EUR 9.5 million, EUR 21.1 million less than HY 2019.
• EBITDA generated of EUR 10.0 million, EUR 20.0 million less than HY 2019.
Classification Society ClassNK, in cooperation with Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line) and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) group, will conduct test operations and measurements for a small scale ship-based CO2 capture demonstration plant, in order to verify the equipment’s use as a marine-based CO2 capture system. This project is being conducted with support from the Maritime Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), as part of its assistance project for research and development of technological advancements in marine resources development.

AIDA Cruises announced that it will offer cruises this fall and winter that combine the fascination of a cruise trip with an unforgettable holiday experience to several popular destinations.
Profit-sharing contract based on fuel savings delivers for both Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä
A unique profit-sharing contract between the technology group Wärtsilä and French operator Brittany Ferries, signed in 2018, is resulting in significant benefits for both companies. Following the installation of Trim and Speed energy management and optimisation technology provided by Wärtsilä Voyage, the project results in a reduction of exhaust emissions, which goes in line with Brittany Ferries’ strategic approach to sustainable shipping.
Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. reported that it has entered into an agreement with a group of investors (the “Investors”), including MSD Partners, L.P., Durable Capital L.P., Headlands Capital, Deep Field Asset Management LLC and Declaration Capital, for the private placement of $85 million of convertible preferred stock.
KONGSBERG and ABB announce digitalization collaboration on edge data collection
Kongsberg Digital and ABB Turbocharging have signed a cooperation agreement on edge data collection and ship engine performance analysis. The companies will work towards a common data infrastructure and accelerate the development of value-added digital applications and services.
SCHOTTEL wins repeat order to supply pump jets for Mystic Cruises
German propulsion manufacturer SCHOTTEL has won a contract to supply state-of-the-art pump jets for five additional expedition cruise ships (with option to include a sixth) for Portuguese-based company Mystic Cruises. Two pump jets will be installed aboard each of the 126-meter-long and 19-meter-wide luxury ships, under construction or on order at West Sea Viana Shipyard in Portugal.
Tallink Grupp has today (28 August) announced that it has made decisions regarding its autumn traffic, resulting in vessel changes on some routes from September.
New mask policy on DFDS' passenger ships
DFDS has introduced a mask policy that follows the highest national standard. This is in addition to our many other measures that aim to keep passengers and crews as safe as possible.
