DFDS’s Channel Business: 221 redundancies

As part of cost reduction measures to adapt to the new market conditions caused by COVID-19, DFDS announced on 29 June that it would axe about 650 jobs across the organisation. It has now announced that out of these 650 jobs, 221 will go in the Channel, spread between its UK and France operations.

GNV will charter the sister ship of CIUDAD DE VALENCIA which has now joined the Armas-Trasmeditrránea fleet following her today’s (4 August) arrival in the port of Cádiz. Currently under construction as yard number 230 by Cantiere Navale Visentini, the yet unnamed ro-pax ferry for GNV is expected to be delivered in the late spring of next year.

As from 13 August, Stena Line will add an intermediate call at the Swedish port of Karlskrona for Liepaja-Travemünde sailings. In the start-up phase, it concerns a weekly westbound-only call for sailings leaving the Latvian port of Liepaja for Travemünde on Thursdays.

After 36 crew members and several guests have been tested positive for COVID-19 on board the ROALD AMUNDSEN, Hurtigruten has decided to temporarily suspend all its expedition cruises. Meanwhile, Aida Cruises has cancelled the planned short trips with AIDAPERLA and AIDAMAR as they didn’t get approval from the Italian flag state.

According to the Belgian online transport and logistics newsletter Flows, P&O Ferries’ PRIDE OF BRUGES will temporarily return to the Zeebrugge-Hull route, operating in freight-only mode between 9 and 19 August.

Through Tennor Holding, Lars Windhorst will take over Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) which filed for insolvency in late April and which officially folded at the end of last week. A newly established FSG will rise out of the ashes of the ‘old’ FSG, employing about 350 out of the yard’s 600 employees.

Setokaikai Kisen’s 61m-long and 13.6m-beam SEA PASEO 2 together with Ishizaki Kisen’s 62.6m-long and 13m-beam SHOYO MARU were introduced on the jointly operated Matsuyama-Kure-Hiroshima route on 1 August.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company (IoMSPCo) has signed a contract with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in Ulsan, South Korea, to build a new ro-pax ferry that will replace the 1998-built BEN-MY-CHREE on services to Douglas, Isle of Man.

COVID-19 has heavily impacted Tallink Grupp’s Q2 2020 financial results

As could be expected, Tallink Grupp’s Q2 2020 financial results have been significantly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Total revenue for the quarter reached EUR 65 million (EUR 256 million in Q2 2019), a 75% reduction compared to the same period in 2019. EBITDA for the second quarter of 2020 was EUR 2.4 million (EUR 50.7 million in Q2 2019) and the unaudited net loss for the quarter was EUR 27.4 million (net profit of EUR 14.9 million in Q2 2019).

European travel survey: 78% want to continue travelling despite COVID-19

The ferry company Stena Line has asked customers throughout Europe about their attitudes to travel and choice of mode of transport in the wake of COVID-19. With 84,309 responses from 11 countries, the trend is clear: 78% want to continue to travel as much as before, or more, despite COVID-19. The same figure applies to the 17,972 Swedish respondents.

Tallink Grupp publishes July 2020 passenger and cargo statistics

Tallink Grupp has today (4 August) published to the stock exchange its July 2020 passenger and cargo transportation statistics. According to the latest figures, the company transported a total of 617,206 passengers during the month, which is 50.2% less than in the same month in 2019, but more than double the number of passengers transported in the previous month, with more than 280,000 passengers transported in June 2020.

Steel sections built at the former Gdanska Shipyard for Tallink Grupp’s new shuttle vessel MYSTAR, which will become the vessel’s food storage area in the future, last night (1-2 August) set sail on the barge KIKKA towed by tugboat METEOR towards the builder RMC´s Rauma shipyard in Finland.

Tallink Grupp has announced that in August and September 2020 it will make two additional special Friday cruises to Helsinki and the Åland islands, operated with the company’s vessel ROMANTIKA and offering a wide range of entertainment on board and taking customers to destinations that are so popular among both Latvian and Finnish travellers this summer.
