Photo above: The countdown for Tokyo Kyushu Ferry’s new Yokosuka-Shinmoji service has started. As from 1 July, the new 527-nautical-mile route will be operated six times weekly by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries-built HAMAYU and SOLEIL. The 15,400grt ro-pax ferries each have a capacity of 268 passengers, 154 trucks and 30 cars. The 46m long and 450-passenger capacity catamaran ferry NORDLICHT II has been delivered to AG EMS from the Kim Seah Shipyard in Indonesia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Penguin International.

The ferry which is based on the Incat Crowther 46 design, is due to enter service on 3 July between Cuxhaven and Helgoland, a route operated by Reederei Cassen Eils, an AG Ems group company.

DFDS delays start of new Calais-Sheerness freight-only service

DFDS’s new daily Calais-Sheerness freight-only service was supposed to start on 1 June. However, DFDS has confirmed to Shippax that the start of this new dedicated freight service, aimed at pushing unaccompanied trailers from Dover to Sheerness, has been delayed to mid-July with the 2,475-lanemetre or 165-trailer capacity MAXINE still earmarked for the new daily return service.

Having won the five-year tender to operate the subsidised Naples-Cagliari-Palermo service, Grimaldi Lines introduced the scrubber-equipped CORFÙ on the route. The 2,256-lanemetre and 956-passenger capacity Visentini Class ro-pax inaugurated Grimaldi Lines' new service yesterday, 1 June.

1 June marked the start of the first steel cutting of yard number W0276, the first of two identical Superstar Class ro-pax ferries for Finnlines’ Naantali-Långnäs-Kapellskär route.

The two state-of-the-art ro-paxes are part of Finnlines EUR 500 million newbuilding programme, also including three modified GG5G Class mega ro-ros under construction at Jinling Yizheng.

Stena AB Q1 2021 financial results

Ferry operations

- During Q1, revenue decreased from SEK 2,803 million in 2020 to SEK 2,312 million in 2021.

- EBITDA ended at SEK 317 million, compared to SEK 211 million in 2020.

Roll-on/Roll-off vessels

- Revenue from the company’s ro-ro activities reached SEK 134 million for the period (SEK 99 million).

- EBITDA ended at SEK 73 million in 2021, compared to SEK 70 million in 2020.

First look at the designs for Steamship Company’s new passenger and cargo vessels

State-of-the-art designs for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company’s new passenger and cargo vessels designed by BMT are being revealed for the first time.
The new 72m passenger ferry will carry 600 passengers over three decks with a contemporary, comfortable seating arrangement, onboard coffee shop and retail area.
It will be capable of a speed of 18 knots, reducing journey time by 20%; anti-roll fins to improve the stability of the crossing; increased cargo capacity with the ability to carry chilled and frozen goods; improved access for passengers with reduced mobility, and a hybrid propulsion system to reduce emissions.

Ostseestaal builds electric passenger ship for Lake Constance

Ostseestaal GmbH & Co. KG has been commissioned by the shipping company Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH (BSB) based in Constance (Baden-Württemberg) to build an electric solar passenger ship.
The fully electric catamaran, 30 meters long and 8 meters wide, is currently in the construction phase.

The integrated ferry and logistics business has added FREYA to its schedule on the North Sea Lo-Lo route in response to rapidly growing demand from British and European customers who need a fast and cost efficient way of transporting goods between the two markets.
The 117 metre container ship has the capacity to carry 650 TEU’s. Together with sister ship Elisabeth, the addition of FREYA will double capacity on the route and increase the number of sailings in each direction every week to six.

Viking Line’s six-hour picnic day cruises without disembarking have grown in popularity. Therefore, Viking Line is now changing the timetable for VIKING XPRS during the summer season in traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn, starting on Monday 7 June. Thanks to the schedule change, short picnic cruises can be made every day. At the same time, passengers are offered the opportunity to board the ship smoothly and comfortably 1.5 hours before departure. This also means that unnecessary congestion can be avoided.

The technology group Wärtsilä announces the divestment of Delivery Centre Santander (“DCS”) to Javier Cavada Corporación Cantabria (“JCCC”). Delivery Centre Santander is a state-of-the-art foundry able to cast the highest grades of NiAlBronze alloys. The facility located in Santander, Northern Spain, employs 45 professionals and has an annual casting capacity of 700 tons.

Hurtigruten Group reports record strong booking numbers

To develop, produce and bring to the market the BioBlock® nasal spray, several well-established Estonian companies and universities joined to form a consortium, that now has entered into a cooperation agreement with Tallink Grupp. This means BioBlock will be available for Tallink customers from next Tuesday, the 1st of June, in the onboard shops of STAR, MEGASTAR and SILJA EUROPA vessels as well as in Tallink’s webshop. The consortium includes Icosagen Cell Factory OÜ, AS Chemi-Pharm, OÜ Teadus ja Tegu, Estonian Life Sciences (Institute of Veterinary Medicine and OÜ Eerika farm) and University of Tartu (Institute of Pharmacy, Institute of Biomedical and Translational Medicine, and Institute of Technology).
