Stena Line offers City of Sassnitz to take over defunct Trelleborg route
Stena Line has offered the City of Sassnitz to take over the ferry route to Trelleborg, until the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis operated by the 1989-built rail-enabled ro-pax SASSNITZ. © Marko Stampehl
According to an article by Swedish daily Trelleborgs Allehanda, Stena Line has offered the City of Sassnitz to take over the entire activity of the Sassnitz-Trelleborg route, also known as ‘Königslinie’ or ‘Kungslinjen’. The takeover would include personnel and the route’s single ferry, SASSNITZ, which was laid up in Uddevalla following Stena Line’s decision to permanently cease the service.
Italian government to save CIN by decree

The Italian government has just issued a recovery decree-law, ensuring general measures for the recovery of the economy in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. This includes a specific measure suggested by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), calling for the extension of the agreement between the MIT and Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione (CIN), albeit not exceeding 12 months after the end of the COVID-19 emergency situation, expected to be 31 July 2020.

Fjord1 has taken delivery of SILDAJORD from Sefine Shipyard. A sister ship to HILLEFJORD and FLORØY, the 84.5m SILDAFJORD is the last of three all-electric double-ender ferries.
P&O Ferries to make a further 1,100 workers redundant – the vast majority seafarers

The crisis at P&O Ferries due to the continued lockdown in the UK and loss of business due to COVID-19 continues, with the Dover-headquartered operator announcing that it is to make 1,100 people redundant – the vast majority of them seafarers. It is understood that this is roughly a quarter of the ferry operator’s workforce.
Marine Atlantic suspends summer 2020 Argentia-North Sydney service

Marine Atlantic has suspended its summer 2020 season service between Argentia and North Sydney due to the continuing COVID-19 crisis. The seasonal route usually operates between mid-June and mid-September.
Financials
Fjord1 reports strong Q1 result
Fjord1 has remained fully operational during the full Q1 period in compliance with the regulations and recommendations to limit the COVID-19 spread. Reduced frequency on routes had only limited effect, but revenues from catering and tourism dwindled. Overall revenue increased to NOK 752 million (+17%), while EBITDA increased to NOK 194 million (+23%).

Royal Caribbean Announces Proposed Offering Of $3.3 Billion Senior Secured Notes
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. today announced that it has commenced a private offering of senior secured notes to be issued by the Company in separate series of notes due 2023 and 2025 (together, the "Notes"), for an aggregate principal amount of $3.3 billion.

Viking Line Abp’s Annual General Meeting was held today, May 13, 2020 at 12:00 noon CEST in Mariehamn, Alånd. The meeting adopted the parent company and consolidated financial statements and also adopted the Board of Directors’ proposal not to pay a dividend for the financial year January 1-December 31, 2019. The Annual General Meeting discharged the Board of Directors and the President and CEO from liability.

EUROPA 2 Using Cold Ironing in Hamburg at the Cruise Center Altona
The EUROPA 2 is now using cold ironing at the Cruise Center Altona in Hamburg, Germany. The process provides shoreside electrical power to a ship at berth while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off. In this test phase, the undisrupted use and compatibility had been comprehensively tested and prepared when the EUROPA 2 was moored in its berth in Altona.
UK Chamber of Shipping urges government to exempt seafarers from quarantine restrictions
Following the Prime Minister’s broadcast the UK Chamber of Shipping is urging the UK government to exempt seafarers and maritime workers from any quarantine restrictions and to provide industry with urgent clarification on the rules around the 14-day quarantine.
IMO endorses new protocols designed to lift barriers to crew changes
The need for ships to change crews and for seafarers to fly home at the end of their periods of service have emerged as two of the biggest challenges facing the shipping industry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has endorsed a series of protocols designed to address these issues.

Tallink adds extra departures for Tallinn-Helsinki route vessel STAR from 14 May 2020
Tallink Grupp has today made the decision to add extra departures on the Tallinn-Helsinki route for shuttle vessel STAR. The group initially announced that STAR would return to the route only for limited weekend departures from 15 May 2020, but due to increased demand and the company’s commitment to ensure maximum safety and adherence to distance requirements onboard, the company has today decided to add further departures to the route already from this Thusrday, 14 May 2020.
Valmet to deliver marine scrubber systems to Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Shimonoseki Shipyard in Japan
Valmet has signed a contract with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Shimonoseki Shipyard to deliver hybrid scrubber systems and water treatment units to two ferries. Each vessel will be equipped with two identical Valmet Marine Scrubber towers for each main engine and a water treatment unit as well as Valmet’s marine automation system.

Approval of loan terms by the Government of the Republic of Estonia
The Government of the Republic of Estonia today approved the terms of a working capital loan to AS Tallink Grupp (the Company). The total amount of the loan limit is EUR 100 million and the loan can be issued in EUR 10-40 million tranches. The interest rate of the three-year maturity loan is 12-month Euribor +2%. The loan must be secured with the assets of the Company’s consolidation group and will be issued by SA KredEx.

As a result of safety measures surrounding the global COVID-19 outbreak, the occasion of first steel cut for a Damen RoPax Ferry 6716 for the Government of Timor-Leste was marked by a digital gathering.
