Stena Line names ships to boost freight capacity by 40% on Travemünde-Liepaja route

As expected, Stena Line will introduce Visentini Class tonnage on the Travemünde-Liepaja route to replace the 1,598-lanemetre capacity STENA GOTHICA and URD later this year.

On 8 April, Meyer Werft laid the keel with the traditional coin ceremony for DISNEY WISH, the first in a series of three cruise ship newbuilds for Disney Cruise Line. 

DISNEY WISH will be powered by LNG, measure about 144,000gt, have a length of 343m and boast 1,250 guest staterooms.

Two sister ships will follow in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

SNGV2’s TEREVAU PITI, a new 77m long and 17m beam ro-pax ferry purpose-built for operation in French Polynesia, has been delivered by the Astilleros Armon shipyard in Vigo and is about to leave Spain for the South Pacific-located overseas collectivity of France.

DFDS to add dedicated Calais-Sheerness freight-only service

Due to increasing demand for unaccompanied freight space in the aftermath of Brexit, DFDS will open a new dedicated freight-only service between Calais and Sheerness on 1 June. 

A daily roundtrip (the timetable will be announced at a later date) will be provided by the 2,475-lanemetre capacity GOTHIA SEAWAYS, currently operating the Fredericia-Copenhagen-Klaipeda route.

As Emanuele Grimaldi revealed to Shippax last week, ahead of the introduction of the 7,800-lanemetre GG5G Class ECO CATANIA and ECO MALTA on Malta Motorways of the Sea’s Genoa-Livorno-Catania-Malta route later this year, Grimaldi will introduce one of its four GG5Gs earmarked for the Italy-Spain trade on the mainland Italy-Sicily-Malta connection already in the second half of April.

Tallink Grupp publishes 2021 first quarter passenger and cargo statistics

Tallink Grupp has announced its 2021 first quarter passenger and cargo statistics to the stock exchange. According to the figures published, the group transported 267 224 passengers in the first quarter of the financial year 2021 (January-March), which is 82.9% less than in the same period last year. The number of passenger vehicles transported in the first quarter of 2021 has also decreased with 75 815 vehicles transported in Q1 2021, which is 60.2% less than in the same period in 2020.

Shipping company to develop carbon-neutral maritime transport using EUDP grants

The Danish shipping company MHO-Co is heading a consortium that will spend EUR 4.5 million during the next three years on developing green solutions for the future of the maritime industry. Together with Aalborg University, among others, and with grants from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), MHO-Co will test fuel cells and new battery technology on the shipping company's advanced hybrid vessels.
