Photo above: DFDS’s 2,475-lanemetre BELGIA SEAWAYS spotted  laid up in Cuxhaven last week. The former SCHIEBORG of Wagenborg, the 2000-built BELGIA SEAWAYS was acquired by DFDS in spring 2019. The freight ro-ro vessel was designed for double-level linkspan operation, but an internal ramp connecting the main deck with the upper deck was installed last year. DFDS’s sixth and last mega ro-ro built by Nanjing Jinling Yizheng’s shipyard has been introduced on the Vlaardingen (Rotterdam)-Immingham route, joining sister ship HOLLANDIA SEAWAYS.

After 15 years of service on the Irish Sea, STENA MERSEY completed her final sailing between Belfast and Birkenhead (Liverpool) at the weekend and sailed from the River Mersey on 14 February bound for Sedef Shipbuilding to start her 36m lengthening and upgrading project.

In what looks like a ‘done deal’ between Baleària and Trasmediterránea, each won one of the public service contracts (PSCs) to serve the Spanish enclave of Melilla. This year’s novelty was that the public service contract was divided into two routes, instead of one and that Motril was added to the Almeria sector.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Statens vegvesen, has awarded Fjord1 to operate the Bognes-Skarberget and Drag-Kjøpsvik routes, starting on 1 December 2022 until 30 November 2032.

Viking Line deep in the red in 2020

Viking Line just published its year-end report for 2020, showing heavy losses in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sales fell from EUR 496.4 million in 2019 to EUR 188.8 million. Operating income was EUR -49.3 million, compared to EUR 17.4 million in 2019.

SCHOTTEL propels electric-ready ferry for Kootenay Lake in British Columbia

German propulsion manufacturer SCHOTTEL has been awarded a contract to deliver main propulsion units for one car ferry to Vancouver-based company Western Pacific Maritime Ltd. The newly built vessel ordered by the British Columbia Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure will be equipped with four high efficiency SCHOTTEL TwinPropellers. Once operational, it will serve the Kootenay Lake in British Columbia. This move will reinforce SCHOTTEL’s strong position in the Canadian ferry market.

Swan Hellenic announced that it has introduced valid Covid-19 vaccination as a pre-embarkation medical requirement for all crew and staff. The vaccination cycle will be carried out at recruitment centres or in the home countries of the crew members in accordance with current local guidelines and approved medical protocols.

As travel restrictions persist, Brittany Ferries extends suspension of some services

Cross-Channel ferry and holiday company Brittany Ferries is extending the suspension of some services operating between the UK, France and Spain.
The move follows continued stringent travel restrictions for passengers on both sides of the Channel. Only essential travel is currently permitted, and there is little prospect of this easing in the near future. Four ships that are currently laid-up, but which had been due to resume service in late March, will not now resume service until mid-May at the earliest.

Brittany Ferries calls for a vaccination-led approach to travel corridor policy

As government hits its target for 15 million Covid vaccinations in the UK, Brittany Ferries says now is the time for a re-think on travel corridors.
While the focus today is rightly on the UK, the transport and holiday company notes that vaccination rates are rising significantly in France and Spain too. These are the countries it serves with ferries departing Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth. They are also the top two destinations for British holidaymakers.

The ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge to join forces

The City of Antwerp and the City of Bruges have reached an agreement to merge their respective ports. The two-city agreement marks the start of a unification process that is expected to take a year to finalise. Once completed, the ports will operate under the name ‘Port of Antwerp-Bruges’. As a result of the merger, the ports will be able to strengthen their position within the global supply chain and continue their course towards sustainable growth. Furthermore, the unified port will be more resilient to the challenges of the future and will take a lead in the transition towards a low-carbon economy. The ambition is for Port of Antwerp-Bruges to become the world's first port to reconcile economy, people and climate.

Helsinki Shipyard laid the keel of the second luxury expedition cruise ship

The keel of NB 517 was laid in accordance with the seafaring traditions and taking into account the current restrictions due to COVID-19. NB 517 is the second of three vessels ordered by Swan Hellenic from Helsinki Shipyard.
