BC Ferries’ Q2 results impacted by pandemic

BC Ferries has released its Q2 results for the three and six months ended 30 September 2020. Not surprisingly, the COVID-19 global pandemic continued to have a significant impact on the company’s operations and financial results.

Pandemic turning screws on ageing Greek ferry fleet

The Greek coastal shipping market is facing a double threat, as 42% of the ferry fleet will have to be replaced in the next decade, while enterprises are suffering due to the pandemic.
CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard hands over STENA EMBLA

China Merchants’ shipyard in Weihai has handed over the fourth E-Flexer to Stena. A sister ship to the earlier delivered STENA ESTRID and STENA EDDA, STENA EMBLA is set to join the latter vessel on the Birkenhead (Liverpool)-Belfast route early next year, replacing the Visentini Class STENA MERSEY which will then be sent to Sedef Shipbuilding in Turkey for her 36m lengthening and conversion.

Second ro-pax for DFDS floated out at GSI

On 13 November, Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) floated out DFDS’s second ro-pax for Baltic service. When delivered in 2022, the 4,500-lanemetre and 600-passenger capacity vessel will primarily serve the Karlshamn-Klaipeda route, joining the yet unnamed sister ship that was floated out on 31 August.

Grimaldi Lines’ first GG5G comes home

On 16 November, exactly one month after her delivery from Jinling Shipyard, Grimaldi Lines’ 67,311gt ECO VALENCIA arrived in Livorno and is ready to take up service on the Italy-Spain MoS, connecting Livorno and Savona with Barcelona and Valencia.

Viking Line cancels VIKING CINDERELLA cruises until early February 2021

On account of the increasing spread of COVID-19 infections in Sweden and recommendations by regional governments urging people to avoid any unnecessary travel, Viking Line has decided to cancel all 20-hour cruises with the VIKING CINDERELLA as of today 16 November 2020 until 3 February 2021.

Tallink receives Finnish government guarantee for additional loan

Stena Line marks 25 years of Dublin-Holyhead service
Swedish ferry company Stena Line is marking another major milestone on 18 November, celebrating 25 years since the launch of their Holyhead to Dublin service back on the 18th November 1995. Since then traffic on the route has grown fivefold and the company has now transported in excess of 12 million passengers, almost 3 million cars and 3.5 million freight units on the route. It continues to operate around the clock moving vital supplies between the Ireland and UK throughout lockdown.
WALLENIUS SOL is expanding with a new Travemünde–Vaasa service
WALLENIUS SOL is now improving and expanding the service for Ostrobothnia. From mid-January 2021, they will add Travemünde on the northbound route Zeebrugge–Antwerpen–Travemünde–Vaasa.

Isle of Man Ship Registry chosen to flag New Zealand’s 2 new Interislander ferries

The Isle of Man Ship Registry has been selected as the flag state to oversee construction of two rail-enabled RoPax ferries that will connect New Zealand’s North and South Islands.
State-owned transport operator KiwiRail has commissioned the future-proofed vessels to modernise its fleet of ferries serving the Cook Strait. KiwiRail’s Interislander service connects New Zealand’s State Highway and national rail networks between the capital city Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island. The Interislander carries approximately 850,000 passengers, 250,000 cars and up to NZ$14 billion worth of freight annually.
Aulong delivers third high-speed catamaran ferry to Blue Sea Jet in China

Austal Limited is pleased to announce that Aulong Shipbuilding, a joint venture between Austal and Jianglong Shipbuilding, in China, has delivered a 42 metre, high-speed catamaran passenger ferry to repeat customer, Blue Sea Jet of China.
