Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania has launched the 72m long AMHERST ISLANDER II, a Damen Road Ferry 6819 E3-type double-ender it is building for Canada’s Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

Damen Shipyards Group’s Galati shipyard has completed the first two hybrid-electric Island Class ferries in a series of six it is building for BC Ferries. The 81.2m long and 17m beam double-enders were loaded on the semi-submersible vessel SUN RISE and will be introduced on the Powell River-Texada Island and Port McNeill-Alert Bay-Sointula routes by mid-2020.

Ponant signs MoA with Fincantieri to build two cruise ships for its Paul Gauguin Cruises brand

Ponant has signed a EUR 300 million memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Fincantieri to design and build two 11,000gt, 230-passenger capacity luxury expedition cruise ships, due for delivery in 2022. To be built by Fincantieri-controlled VARD, the MoA includes an option for one more ship of the same class.

MOL pioneers LNG ferry orders

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced plans to build two LNG-powered ro-pax ferries for its subsidiary, Ferry Sunflower.

The AVIC Weihai Shipyard, part of China Merchants, has officially delivered STENA ESTRID to Stena Line. STENA ESTRID is the first in a series of nine E-Flexers that represent six different designs with Stena RoRo holding an option for two more vessels of the same class.

More efficient access control system for the Port of Trelleborg
As part of striving to become the best RoRo port in Europe, Port of Trelleborg is investing in digitalisation and new IT solutions. In a project collaboration with Hogia, the port has introduced a fully automatic gating solution for the port’s existing gate-in. With the new solution, the trucks can keep moving throughout the access control process, and without having to stop to show a ticket or entry documentation. This enables a constant flow of vehicles into the port, thereby streamlining entry, and avoiding congestion build-up. This also has a positive impact on both the environment as well as safety within the port and on the port hinterland road network.

MacGregor secures complete piggy-back hatch cover order from Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured an order to provide a complete set of remote operated piggy-back hatch covers with hydraulic lifting and an internal traction electric drive system to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding (FBS). MacGregor`s scope of supply includes design & key components, steel material, fabrication and delivery of the hatch covers to FBS. The order is booked into Cargotec's fourth quarter 2019 order intake, with a planned delivery of the solution during the fourth quarter of 2020.
With the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the “renovated” Calata delle Vele cruise ship quay and Palacrociere terminal 1 were inaugurated in the historic port of Savona.
IMO agrees a goal-based approach to help cut emissions
The IMO, which met in London this week to discuss how the shipping industry can continue to decarbonise, has agreed that a goal-setting approach is the best way to reduce carbon emissions in the short-term. Full details of the approach will be resolved next year.
Wärtsilä and PSA Marine collaborate to achieve clean energy shipping
The technology group Wärtsilä and Singapore-based PSA Marine have agreed to collaborate in the co-creation of smart technologies for the marine sector. The focus will be on solutions that are human-centric and deployable. The Letter of Intent was signed on November 14 as part of the events celebrating the anniversary of the opening of the Wärtsilä Acceleration Centre in Singapore.
Three Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ ships to undergo multi-million-Pound refit this Winter
Three of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ ocean ships will be undergoing a multi-million-Pound refit this Winter, as part of an extensive enhancement programme – in preparation for the start of the 2020/21 cruise season.
The three ships – BRAEMAR, BALMORAL and BLACK WATCH – will be undergoing various engineering works, general maintenance and refurbishment during their dry docks at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, as well as the creation of several new public areas and cabin enhancements.
