Tallink Grupp’s Q3 revenue halved

Tallink Grupp released its unaudited financial results for Q3 2020, showing a net loss of EUR 23.9 million compared to a profit of EUR 54.6 million in the same period last year. Revenues decreased by 50% compared to the same period last year, totalling EUR 143.7 million.

The first of the government of Trinidad and Tobago’s two newbuilding high-speed ro-pax catamarans, the all-aluminium Austal Auto Express 94m A.P.T. JAMES, has been delivered by the Australian builder’s Vietnamese yard in Ving Tau.

Coming as little surprise, the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig has today, 3 November 2020, dismissed all pending lawsuits against the planning approval decision for the German section of the Fehmarnbelt fixed link from Puttgarden to Rødby. The plaintiffs were two environmental associations, three companies – including Scandlines, the operator of the Puttgarden-Rødby ferry service – and the city of Fehmarn.

Jalesh Cruises’ KARNIKA auctioned

Two years ago, the Indian start-up Jalesh Cruises bought the former PACIFIC JEWEL from P&O Cruises Australia to offer cruises targeted at the Indian market under its new name KARNIKA. The company became a victim of COVID-19 and suspended its operations last month with KARNIKA now reportedly sold at auction for USD 11.65 million. Albeit not confirmed, it is understood that the new owners of KARNIKA will recycle the vessel in Alang, India.

The introduction of the lengthened Visentini Class vessels between Nynäshamn and Venstpils next year, enables Stena Line to further shuffle its fleet with the Travemünde-Liepaja freight-oriented ro-pax ferries STENA GOTHICA and URD to be replaced by larger and faster tonnage in spring next year.

Yara Marine and Norwegian Cruise Line mark green marine milestone

With eight years of close collaboration in the books, Norwegian Cruise Line and Yara Marine Technologies can celebrate the finalization of scrubber installations onboard eight NCL ships. The program kicked off in 2012, with the first installation on the PRIDE OF AMERICA completed in early 2014. Exhaust gas cleaning was still uncharted territory for most cruise operators in 2012, and scrubber installation on ships in service was a groundbreaking concept, recalls Peter Strandberg, Chief Technical Officer in Yara Marine Technologies.

Viking Announces Completion Of First PCR Laboratory At Sea On The VIKING STAR

Viking® announced that it has completed installation of the first full-scale PCR laboratory at sea. This new onboard facility – an industry first – allows for unprecedented testing capacity in the cruise industry, enabling Viking to conduct PCR testing of all crew members and guests with a non-invasive saliva test. The laboratory has enough capacity for daily testing of every crew member and guest, which provides flexibility to respond to COVID-19 prevalence levels around the world.

DNV GL and STB to develop cruise infection compliance audit and certification program

Singapore is looking to pilot the return of cruising as the economy starts to gradually re-open. To rebuild passenger and crew confidence amidst the COVID-19 crisis, DNV GL, together with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) are jointly developing the CruiseSafe certification, a compliance audit and certification programme for cruises sailing from the port of Singapore.

The methanol-operated fuel cell system from Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has been issued “Approval in Principle” by the classification society DNV GL. This sets the course for further testing: Systems backed by the “Pa-X-ell 2” research project will be installed on the AIDANova cruise ship as soon as in 2021. Five innovation partners – Freudenberg, Lürssen, Meyer Werft, AIDA Cruises, and DNV GL – work closely together here.

XALT Energy high-performance battery system for P&O Ferries’ two new vessels

XALT Energy – a Freudenberg company will supply high-performance battery systems for inclusion in ABB Marine & Ports’ integrated power and propulsion scope, for P&O Ferries’ two new vessels. The battery systems will provide an output of 8,816 kWh per ship to the ferries. The two ferries are set to operate between Dover, England and Calais, France as of 2023. P&O operates a total of 20 ships which also travel regularly between England, Scotland and Ireland in addition to the above-mentioned route. Based on 2019 figures, more than nine million passengers are transported on these ships every year.

AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for October 2020

In October 2020 AS Tallink Grupp transported 162 311 passengers, which is a 79.7% decrease compared to October 2019. The number of cargo units decreased by 18.7% to 27 794 units and the number of passenger vehicles decreased by 46.2% to 46 524 units in the same comparison.

On 2 November Philipp Maracke took over the management of the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) as CEO.

Wärtsilä’s strong position in cruise sector enhanced with new orders

The technology group Wärtsilä continues to work closely with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the supply of a broad range of solutions to be installed in a number of cruise ships currently being built by the yard. The latest orders are for complete waste treatment systems and fresh water generators for two vessels – order placed in July 2020 – and for the entertainment systems for two new series of ships totalling eight vessels in all, the first orders for which were placed with Wärtsilä in Q1 2020.

Steen Friis Hansen, the founder of Steen Friis Design, has passed away

Steen Friis Hansen was a trained architect from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and offset his career in maritime design in Claus Horn’s design studio in Copenhagen. In 1998, he founded Steen Friis Design which he took from a one-man company to a larger design studio and strong brand, where he and his team of architects and interior designers over the years contributed significantly to the ferry industry and passenger vessels – both in Denmark and internationally.

Nippon Paint: New tool developed for diverless hull coating inspection

Nippon Paint Marine has developed a novel hull inspection tool that negates the need for divers or remotely operated vehicles. The underwater inspection of a ship’s hull coating can now be performed by a single inspector on dry land or from a boat.

More Ecospeed protection for roro ferry after excellent results

In 2019 Finnish shipping company Eckerö coated the open cargo deck of their roro passenger ferry FINBO CARGO with Ecospeed. This was done to protect the deck against damage from cars and cargo. One year later the deck was still in excellent condition, in strong contrast to previous years. As a result, Eckerö decided to coat the ice belt and most of the hull with Ecospeed to offer it the same lasting protection.

BC Ferries' third battery electric hybrid vessel launches at Damen Shipyard

BC Ferries continues to roll out its Clean Futures Plan with the launch of its third battery electric-hybrid Island Class vessel. The vessel entered the water early Wednesday morning at Damen Shipyard in Romania.
Work will continue on the new ship until scheduled sea trials in February. Following successful sea trials, the vessel will make its way to Point Hope Maritime in Victoria in summer 2021 for final preparations. 


Damen signs with Aqualiner-Swets in nine vessel order

On the 2nd of November, Damen Shipyards signed a contract with the Dutch ferry joint venture Aqualiner-Swets for a total of nine passenger vessels. With these vessels, the joint venture will provide the public transportation service between Rotterdam and the Drecht cities on behalf of the Province of South Holland and the Region from 2022, better known as Waterbus. Aqualiner-Swets turned out to be the winner of a EU tendered contract of maximum fifteen years.
